We had the good fortune of connecting with Shylah May and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shylah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to start my own business because I was looking for a job that served a better purpose in our world. I wanted to do something that helped others be better, do better and feel better about themselves. Three years ago, my journey with mental health inspired me to start a blog, Shylahmay.com. At the time, not many people were talking about these scary feelings I was once feeling (depressions) so I wanted to start talking about it. I wanted to create a safe place for others as well, in case people were feeling the same way or had experienced mental health issues before. The blog made me get really vulnerable, and motivated me to start sharing it all. Three years later, shylahmay.com has brought people closer together, helped many overcome hard times, and has also saved lives. This little idea has also transpired into a loungewear line that consists of positive affirmations embroidered into the clothing. We are all about feeling good in your (out)fit.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m so proud of our businesses. Shylah May is a blog, brand, and has recently transpired into a loungewear line inspired by mental health. You can follow along @shylahmay on Instagram. The blog is safe place for conversation, it consists a plethora of healthy recipes, mental health tips, home decor, fitness tips and travel. It will leave you feeling good, inspired and motivated.
Shop Shylah May, is a mother-daughter owned small business. We are a loungewear line inspired by my lifestyle of self-love and priority for mental health. We stand out because we embroider positive affirmations into our sweat sets to help spread the message of self-love.
Starting a blog three years ago, that has since turned into a business, hasn’t been easy at times, but when you love something so much, it makes it easy to overcome those challenges. The lesson I learned along the way, is when you love something so much, don’t let it go. I know it sounds cheesy, but if you keep working at it, your dream/business will happen. Maybe it won’t come true as quickly as you would like it to happen, but there’s a reason for that. However, it will happen.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am born and raised in Encinitas, California. The only time I left Encinitas to live somewhere else was for college, and even then, I went to San Diego State …so I really haven’t left San Diego! I absolutely love North County San Diego the best… it’s a lot more laid back than the rest of San Diego and there is a lot less tourists.
Here’s a little itinerary for North County San Diego:
Where to stay: Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff by the Sea, Solana Beach, or Del Mar… west of the 5 freeway. Breakfast: Nectarine Grove (healthy), Goodonya (healthy), Claires on Cedros (my favorite), Naked Cafe (Solana Beach location is on the beach!)
Lunch: Taco Stand, City Tacos, Fish 101, Mendocino Farms, Union Tap, Bier Garden
Dinner: Buena Forchetta (best italian), Herb and Sea (fancier), Wavery (cutest ambiance), Alce (my fave), Campfire (best menu)
Smoothies: Choice Juicery
To Do: Beach day at D street or Moonlight in Encinitas, rent bikes and ride the 101, drive the 101 (it’s beautiful), beach walk, surf, and hike Torrey Pines.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to my family. Without their amazing support system, I wouldn’t be here today. In fact, Shop Shylah May wouldn’t be here today without my co-founder, Connie Kenyon (my mom!). I want to give another shout out to Melissa Wood Health. The MWH Method has not only helped me physically, but most importantly, has changed my life mentally and emotionally. The last two shout outs I would love to give is to the author Glenn Doyle for creating one of the most transformative books, Untamed, and to the author, Jen Sincero, for writing You are a Badass. This book has helped me trust myself to take risks in life that have been scary at first, but very rewarding.
