We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheree Trask and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheree, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I firmly believe in the saying, “no risk, no reward.” I have spent my entire life running from society’s standards and instead, paving my own way, on my terms. Risk is scary, there’s no doubt about it! But what I find even scarier is the possibility of living a mediocre existence, constantly plagued by the question: what if? In my experience, with every risk comes a reward; sometimes that reward looks like “failure.” But even with failure, we learn and we have the opportunity to grow, right? So is it really failure, or simply a choice point to do something different next time, armed with new knowledge and skills to succeed, and in doing so, rise to our next level of Self?
I have risked more times than I can count. And each time, I felt terrified to jump all in because the outcome was unknown. What I have learned in the process, though, is that we can all do hard things… and we were never meant to play small or shrink ourselves to fit in with the crowd. We were placed here with a purpose and it’s up to us to discover what that is and say YES to possibility — risk included.
I gave up everything (401k, comfortable income, etc.) to follow my heart and go after my souls calling – what I believe to be my divine purpose on this planet. And while I fell flat on my face a few times in the process of finding my footing, the lessons along the way have been invaluable. In fact, I would do it all over again for the peace and alignment I feel now given the freedom I have to create the life I want, doing work I love, without a cap on my success or impact.
Risk has been THE reward. And I am forever grateful for the opportunities presented because I chose to say YES to my soul instead of shrinking myself out of fear.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Ghostwriter and Author Mentor in Transformational Non-Fiction; otherwise known as the woo-woo section of the bookstore (personal development, self help). By no means was this the path I thought I would take (my background is in Styling for TV/Film and Holistic Health/Nutrition). However, due to a serendipitous encounter a decade ago, which put me on this path, I was able to make sense of my gifts and life experiences, and my purpose was made clear in the process: to help others embrace and embody their story and create a bigger impact in the world.
As a sexual assault survivor, having been raped at the age of 19, all of the brave souls that come to me happen to be survivors in their own right as well. I am blessed and honored to be trusted to hold such sacred space for their truth to unfold, out of their heart and onto the pages so that together, we can craft a message that gives meaning to their experience, empowering others through their courage to show up and be seen fully.
But the road to my own personal success has been anything but easy.
It’s been paved in tears, heartache, and betrayal mixed with a ton of growth, excitement, fun, and showing myself what I was capable of! No matter how hard it got, I never once considered quitting (not really, anyway). It’s been challenging, absolutely! But the ride has been so worth it and honestly, there’s not a whole lot I would change (other than: get everything in writing upfront, period!).
I have “lost” everything TWICE. And you know what? I found a way to come back stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. Through resilience I have found my strength and a deeper sense of Self, which has allowed me to guide and support more people — the very reason I do what I do in the first place!
I am blessed to have an incredible support system of amazing humans in my life, starting with my family and friends. I have a partner that believes in me more than I likely believe in myself, and clients that epitomize the meaning of COURAGE. I know how lucky I am to be surrounded by so much love and I am so grateful! I could not have gotten through all the chaos and “failures” without them so to that I say, thank you!
My advise: find your tribe and love them hard. Find gratitude in your day to day, even (and especially) the little things, for they often become the big things. Keep growing. Show up authentically, in all of your wild and messy glory, unapologetically. Love big. Express gratitude. Be present. Stay open. Lean into discomfort. Say yes to whatever lights your soul on fire. You are meant for great things.
My company values are INTEGRITY and IMPACT, which means — my clients embody these attributes as well. I love working with other epic humans on a mission to create real, positive change in the world and have made it my life’s work to support those willing to jump in and be brave with their life. My programs are not just about writing a book; I work with the whole person. That means, we do personal development work; I coach on communication, human connection, relationships, and so much more! Every container is sacred and created with and for my client on an individual basis. Sure, the framework is the same. But the details are unique, and that’s what makes my work so special.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Loaded question. I’ve lived in San Diego for 22 years now and no matter where I’ve traveled, my heart always feels so at home in this incredible city.
Some of my favorite spots include:
Carlsbad Village – cute shops, restaurants, wine bars and all within blocks from the ocean!
Seaport Village – a taste of San Diego in all it’s touristy goodness!
Del Mar – delicious food, and amazing sunsets!
If you can’t tell, I like food!
Speaking of, some amazing places to eat and drink include:
Coasterra – near the airport
Blue Ocean Sushi – Carlsbad location
264 Fresco – Carlsbad Village
Fidel’s Little Mexico – Solana Beach/Del Mar area
Oak & Elixir – Carlsbad Village
Catania – La Jolla
George’s at the Cove – La Jolla
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To the Universe for placing every single person and experience in my path – thank you.
To all the men that have taken pieces of me for selfish gain; and to all others that have shown me there’s another way – thank you. #metoo
To all the women that have stood in the fire alongside me, shoulder to shoulder – thank you.
To my beautiful Nana for showing me that fierceness comes by embracing our truth – thank you.
And to my biggest cheerleader, my incredible Mom, for believing in me even when I doubted my dreams were possible – thank you.
