We had the good fortune of connecting with Shenikwa Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shenikwa, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
The most important thing I’ve done as a single mom was go back to school. I’ve shown my daughter the importance of hard work and getting things done. I work full time, style hair, and attend college. I’m currently pursuing my bachelors degree and have been on the President’s list each term. She tells me how this has inspired her to go harder in school. She says that if I can do it so can she. Distance learning hasn’t been easy for children so I’m glad that I made a positive impact on her during these crazy times.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first interviewed with your magazine I had just opened up my first business. Since then I’ve realized that I wasn’t as passionate about it as I had previously thought. I’ve since made that business more of a supplemental income. Listening to so many amazing Podcast and seeing how they connect so many people has inspired me to want to start my own. I want to create a space that allows people to share their ideas and experiences with others. Inclusivity is very important to me and I would hate for anyone to feel alone in their life journey. What I’d like for people to take away from my story is that it’s ok to change your mind and pride isn’t everything. I held on to my old business much longer that I should have. It was really hard to walk away but once I did I felt free and open to new opportunities. So many different opportunities have fell into my lap. I feel so grateful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting San Diego the first place I’d take them would be on a morning hike at Torrey Pines. The views are amazing and the trail goes down to a beautiful beach. We’d definitely spend some time in North Park. They have such amazing bars and restaurants. My favorite spot is Gossip Grill because of the great drinks and Tatchos!! Hendo studios is a must! The space allows you to be super creative with multiple areas to shoot in and tons of props. All you need is Omar behind the camera and Kayla on the makeup!! You can’t lose with that team.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a huge shoutout to my beautiful daughter Mya. She is courageous, selfless, and my biggest motivation. She is always willing to put others first and she gives the best advice. She’s an outstanding student and amazing dancer. As secretary of BSU she has participated in multiple interviews that shed light on the experience of minorities in this country. Mya is so vocal when it comes to human rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights and so much more. She is so ahead of the game it seems like she’s been here before. She never gives up on anything no matter how tough it is. I love and admire her so much!
