We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayan Selby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shayan, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the most important factor is the single decision to try not to cater to every style and trend for the sake of building more clientele. I played it really safe in the beginning, making clothes with an aesthetic that technically wasn’t one I had enjoyed. I wanted to have an article of clothing for every style-type of person and it didn’t make me happy. The moment I started to create things that made ME happy, I started to see an incline in popularity, sales and people appreciating the brand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A lot of hardwork goes into keeping a brand going. I do 98% of everything by myself, so it gets overwhelming but the satisfaction of knowing “I did that” really makes it all so worth it. It’s not easy and I know how it could look like it is from the outside. There were countless days that transitioned into months of continuous work-days that really lead to where it is today, and I think the love for what I do really does set the brand apart from others. I learned that sometimes it does pay off to do what you WANT at any cost. (As long as it is healthy & doesn’t hurt yourself or anyone else.) I want the world to know that SAINTWULF was created with passion. Whether or not they know what/who it is, I want them to see a SAINTWULF garment and feel something. I want people to look at a SAINTUWLF piece and see its quality, admire the vision, and appreciate it for what it is.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I try to convince everyone that comes to visit me in the Suburbs of Temecula to a nice stay-cation at the wineries. Some good wine, good food, spa treatments at the resort is beneficial to everyone! Temecula Wine Country really is a great place to gather around for relaxed fun with your friends and loved ones. When it comes to certain places South Coast winery has the most beautiful view, but im a sucker for the sweeeeeet dessert wine at Robert Ranzoni’s. There’s a cute Axe Throwing spot in Temecula that is fun to attend with some friends, too. It’s called SO-CAL AXE. Thats a great place to enjoy company & get out some pent up aggression from the previous work week, haha.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Seeing people like Silvia Fendi, Demna Gvasalia, Kanye West, Virgil Abloh & Olivier Rousteing take the fashion world by the horns was the vision that really inspired me. And although they have no idea who I am, and they are big names, their risk-taking and creative journey has been so inspirational and the silent-artificial support for starting my own line. But in my day to day life, and the most important person who deserves recognition, is my husband Zachary. He always encourages me to do what I love. I would have never started SAINTWULF had it not been for him. I was always too afraid to start the company, there was a lot of back and forth prior, but he always manages to find a way to get me, to believe in myself. Even on the days where I feel like giving up and things get tough.
