We had the good fortune of connecting with Shani Weiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shani, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business is my life, I’m a musician and I’ve been doing music since I was 5. The decision of making it into a career was before studying for my degree when I took a year off to think about if this is what I want to do with my life, or keep it as a hobby. After that year I came to the conclusion that I choose to live my passion, more than study for something that will earn me more money but rot my dreams.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I belong to a very unique type of artists – Musician Moms. The difference between a musician mom and a regular mom is that we gig, leaving the house in the evening so dad puts the kids to bed, coming back in the small hours of the morning. That extreme polarizing feeling in the morning after a gig, where you were on stage receiving applause and admiration to changing nappies in the morning and trying to get the kids off to school on time, is challenging. Sometimes I’ll get a tune in my head, a muse, it’s always been a sacred moment where I must drop everything and go to the piano or the guitar and create and it’s not easy dropping everything when you’re a mum. Before, I thought after you have kids you die 🙂 end of career, so long. But it just gave me more drive and 6 months after giving birth I launched my Debut Album – Touch of Reality, that I had been working on for two years in the studio, toured with a band, moved to live in Australia. In Melbourne I had a ton of gigs, a new band, started up two choirs, taught music and continued creating so it turns out that what keeps me busy is mostly balancing those two worlds. Following that is the continuous daily routine of practice, composing, arranging and teaching.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Thats such a hard question we’ve been in lockdown for everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr But, we’d probably go to the Yarra Valley and spend the days bushwalking and wine and cheese tasting. In the evening go to the local pub to listen to some live music and wake up without an alarm clock. After a weekend in the Valley I’d take them around the CBD where there is a large variety of restaurants and pubs.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think everyone in my life, cliche as it sounds are part of making me who I am. Those who encouraged me made me stronger, those who hurt or broke me made me more motivated, those who were better than me inspired me to beat them 🙂
