We had the good fortune of connecting with Scarlett Dyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scarlett, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success / the success of my brand is staying true to who I am and what I believe in. This means using my designs and aesthetic to send a message about things that are important to me: environmental causes, animal rights, and inclusivity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a fashion designer, illustrator & actress based in L.A. My brand, house of scarlett, may be different from others because one of my goals as a designer is to represent the differently-abled community in the fashion industry. As someone who uses a wheelchair, I can say that this community is underrepresented in fashion. It’s a rarity to see a differently-abled model on the pages of any fashion magazine wearing couture garments – I want to change that. As a designer, it is my mission to create high-fashion clothes that can be worn by any body. The same goes for my acting – I want to represent this community in a way that isn’t tokenized.
I’m most proud of my clear vision / design aesthetic and passion for my work. I got to where I am because of my education at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). I graduated in June 2021 with a B.A. in Fashion Design – FIDM taught me how to hone in my aesthetic and take it to the next level.
I want the world to know that just because someone uses a wheelchair, doesn’t in any way mean that they can’t be powerful, successful – fashionable. That’s what I want my brand to stand for.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in DTLA, so there are so many amazing locations to visit. My personal favorite is the rooftop bar at the Ace Hotel. It’s so trendy and chic and just an overall great place to chill with a perfect view of the city. Next I would take them to Melrose Ave., specifically Vivienne Westwood’s storefront (my favorite) – it’s in a great location with plenty of beautiful murals which are definitely a signature of L.A. I would also take them to the Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens in Pasadena for time in nature.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Someone who definitely deserves major recognition is my mom. She raised to to be unapologetic of who I am and to always fight for what I believe in. My mom has always been my main source of inspiration – she’s a fashion icon with an effortless sense of style. I’m truly so lucky to have her as a best friend.
