We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and truly believe where and how I grew up has given me a strong foundation for my current success! Wisconsin, and the Mid-West, has a very hard-working culture, and that’s something that was instilled in me from a very young age. My mom is a Pianist, and I began taking piano lessons with her around age 5, practicing every day and competing in several judged competitions. I craved success and respected the dedication it took to get there. At age 7, I began swimming competitively, practicing 7-9 times each week in addition to playing piano, and all of the other activities a 7-year-old does. I learned time management and discipline right away, because I had to… because I had a real passion for both, and because I had the encouragement and support from my parents to push myself and work hard. It’s definitely something that has stuck with me through college and throughout my professional life. I suppose I still push myself in those same ways, between working my full-time job in Food Sales and Consulting, teaching at Cyclebar Hillcrest and volunteering with The Animal Pad. When I find passion in something, I definitely go all in, and is something I’m not sure I’d be able to do if I grew up in a different part of the country or if I had a different upbringing that I did.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m super proud of where I am across all parts of my career! I am a food consultant for a major food manufacturer and the youngest on my team at the highest level for my position, which is something that I’ve worked hard to build. I have definitely had challenges along the way, but my commitment to growth and success has allowed me to get where I am today. Something that sets me apart is that I am very comfortable with the uncomfortable. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m committed to accomplishing my goals. I’ve moved cross-country three times for my professional career, and have pursued passions of fitness and animal rescue to fulfill any voids that may come with the corporate world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ohhhh! I love this – I’m definitely the person that friends ask for all of these!! If I have friends visiting that have never been to San Diego, I have a somewhat standard start to the day that I never get sick of and that friends love! We usually start doing a hike at Torrey Pines to get some fresh air and ocean views, and then head down to Oscar’s Mexican Seafood for some bomb fish tacos! We’ll usually hit up a beach bar to stay in the sun, and explore the boardwalks, lay out, etc. At night, I love taking friends to dinner to Madison on Park or somewhere in Little Italy… maybe Herb & Wood for a delicious dinner, great vibes and yummy cocktails. I always end up finishing the night at Polite Provisions, it’s the best bar in SD!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Tori Lapid!! She’s the Lead Instructor at Cyclebar Hillcrest and is one fo the most wonderful humans on the planet! Before I started teaching at Cyclebar, I was a rider and member, and found myself in Tori’s class more than anyone else’s. She has this amazing personality, so much energy and so much passion about life and about Cyclebar! Though she wasn’t yet the Lead Instructor when I went through instructor training, she was there the whole time and so willing to help in any way she could. She’s such a leader and a wealth of knowledge, and an even better friend! Through the last year, we’ve gotten so close and she’s definitely one of my best friends! Another big shoutout to my parents, my swim coaches and my friends! I’ve been so lucky to have an amazing, supportive group of people that have encouraged me to follow my passions and helped me along the way!
