We had the good fortune of connecting with Sanford Shapes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sanford Shapes, why did you pursue a creative career?
Sanford Shapes started organically out of pure passion and fun. We began woodworking and building skateboards simply because we wanted to create our own shapes and designs for ourselves and our friends. After creating those first few boards, we realized that we shared a love for woodworking, and we were hooked! It was an easy decision to take the next step and share our passions with the world. At Sanford Shapes, we have always found creativity to be the best outlet to express ourselves whether we are surfing and skateboarding, or woodworking and experimenting with artistic designs. We channel inspiration from our daily lives while surfing and being surrounded by nature and we implement this inspiration into all of our products. All of our cruisers and cutting boards are handcrafted using natural wood colors. Avoiding paint, stain, or dye and simply appreciating the variety of colors that nature has to offer is what inspires our designs. However, the creative process behind crafting these artisan products goes far beyond aesthetics. We’ve had to develop technical skills and abilities in order to efficiently solve engineering and practical problems as well as learn how to start, grow, and operate a successful small business.

Producing these functional, handmade products has also given us the opportunity to learn from and inspire others. At the end of the day, the feedback and connections with customers and other creatives in our network have been the most rewarding aspect of starting a local small business. We look forward to working with other amazing creatives, giving back to our supportive community, and helping each other become the best versions of ourselves while doing what we love most. Woodworking! While the start of Sanford Shapes was spontaneous and unplanned, we now have a myriad of reasons to continue pursuing this artistic career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We began making skateboards for fun at a very young age, with no intention of starting a business. Over the years, as our skills sharpened, we began producing products that our friends and community admired. Getting to do what we love as a career is the greatest blessing we could ask for, but that doesn’t mean it’s always been easy. We’ve had to overcome many challenges along the way. Managing a business takes a lot of hard work, and can be stressful at times. We’ve overcome these challenges by seeing obstacles as an opportunity to learn and grow. We’ve learned how to stay strong through struggles, stay focused on what we do, but also have a lot of fun and not take ourselves too seriously! We want the world to know that pursuing something that you find meaningful is very rewarding, and paves the way for many experiences in the future. The main thing we want people to know about our brand is our story. Since we started as bunch of young surfer kids messing around in the wood shop, and evolved into a legitimate business, we have shown that anything is possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our favorite things to do in the city are going to the beach, skating around, getting tacos, and enjoying thai food from our favorite spot, Birdseye Kitchen. We enjoy going to the leucadia farmers market on sundays. There are lots of great restaurants, and places to hang out in our town. It’s also a quick drive down to Baja where we can get good tacos, and even better waves.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Uncle Don and Aunt Cari are the reason Sanford Shapes was able to come into fruition. Don is a contractor by trade, and carpenter by hobby, so there’s always been a nice wood shop at the house. Here is where us kids drew inspiration, and spent a lot of our time growing up. Don and Caris love, generosity, patience, and mentorship, is what allowed us to develop our woodworking skills, while having fun.
