We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Wallace and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Lonely Floater started off as a gift to my one of my best friends, Lovans Florial. I was deployed in Spain while serving in the United States Navy, and we were both going through our own tribulations at the time. I thought it would be a good idea to edit one of the artworks he was going to dedicate to a musical compendium (that is still pending release), and surprise him with it. Lord knows during the year of 2015 we could sure use a smile. I decided to place the design on the front of a 3/4 raglan baseball shirt and on the lower back it said LFxNYC. What the abbreviation stood for yesterday, is still what it stands for today: “Lonely Floater by New York City.” The design that was used in the front of the shirt was a silhouette of a man holding onto a red balloon by its’ string. We definitely didn’t expect what would happen next and how its’ symbolism would change our lives forever.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Lonely Floater is a lifestyle brand that was developed for over a year in 2015. We started reaching out to the public as an Limited Liability Company out of our hometown, Mount Vernon, New York, on October 31st, 2016. We’ve dealt with minor-issues in the realms of staffing and shady lawyers however, Lovans and I were able to overcome these nuances with tact and the utmost professionalism. The standard we’ve established for ourselves and our craft has kept away a lot of individuals who are unsure of their goals but has simultaneously invited some outstanding up-and-coming geniuses of our time. Our Mission Statement: Lonely Floater is a living, breathing community that embodies “individualism” within the masses. But that’s not to say that we condone toxic seclusion or cutting people off. Lonely Floater is a lifestyle. A shift of consciousness that promotes individuality and awareness. Negativity can easily hinder progression and prevent you from reaching your full potential. We pride ourselves for Floating above adversity and Staying Up during times of turmoil. To travel, learn, and grow in order to spread knowledge to those who seek it. Our Vision: We promote to our Floaters who come from all walks of life and schools of thought that their future isn’t of a predetermined path. We tell them to dream, focus and maintain a positive outlook because our thoughts, words, and actions shape our Universe. Some Floaters are Introverts others are Extroverts. However, this doesn’t stop one spectrum from excelling in the strengths of the other. There are no boundaries to our creativity nor our capabilities. Our Floaters range from artists to athletes and entrepreneurs to scientists. We all take our craft seriously and we are all Floating to discover the self-determined direction that we want to go. Whether you’re in the process of finding yourself or your flight plan has already been decided by you, with a friendly reminder we say to “Fly At Your Own Altitude.“ Our Core Values: The basic description of a Lonely Floater would be individualism within the masses. A seeker of knowledge and wisdom. A traveler who experiences different cultures while learning the things that people value, and why they value them. And ultimately, someone who brings back this information and shares it with a friend. Which in turn will lead that friend on a journey to see it all for themselves. And Finally, Our Brand Promise: Lonely Floater will continue to develop a global community that embraces individualism, spreads knowledge and welcomes any self-identifiable label Our clothing, comic book series and accessories have always been a means of marketing to grow our brand into something way bigger. As of October 31st 2019, we’ve announced our Master Vision of evolving our lifestyle brand into an Art & Music Festival organization. The type that holds yearly events that open-heartedly invites different walks of life and schools of thought.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I am originally from New York so I have to mention that I used to love pizza til’ I came to San Diego. Sorry y’all! The best pie I’ve had so far… I would probably say came from Pizzeria Luigis in Golden HIll. However, some of the many food-joints I like to frequent are Laylahs, Ackee Tree, Rocksteady, Island Spice, The Morning After, Street Car Merchants, Surf & Soul, and Soda & Swine. Balboa park and its’ Japanese Friendship garden provide a little getaway and also an introduction to an international friendship between San Diego and its’ sister city Yokohoma (Japan). I love going on dates to these places because they provide such atmospherics; if not a vibe that resonates with the kind of energy I desire to put out. As for the spots where I like to imbibe… You’ll just have to catch me outside for that one. Before I go…. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my parents for their love and support, especially my mother who is a nurse in New York that works tirelessly to combat COVID-19 cases with her unit. I would like to dedicate this to my sister whose photo I’ve carried with me for the last nine years of military service, because I couldn’t show her the world myself (yet). I would like to dedicate this to the Co-Owner, his mother, family and all of our mutual friends that have supported us since inception. Every single person who played a part in our inevitable success matters, and I still thank you, I would like to dedicate this to my support system whom we’ve dubbed as the “Wu-Tang 3:16.” Thank you for the years of daily inspiration, words of affirmation, and the realness it takes to make magic happen. I couldn’t be more proud to be an influential member of a group of highly successful veterans who won’t accept settling as an option. And finally, I would like to dedicate this to the people that came from nothing. The type of people who’ve decided that such an excuse wasn’t good enough to stop manifestation and creation from to leading to fruition. Ad Astra.
