We had the good fortune of connecting with Ritu Singla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ritu, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
If you ask me about balance in life then I would say that there is no such thing as balancing everything. You have to get rid of the clutter in your calendar. 70% of our daily life has items that can be deferred. Most of them indefinitely :D. Keep what’s the most important for your personal life, family, and business. Achieving balance would be automatic when you have your priorities right. Work life balance: over the years; I have realized my priorities. I know what I want to accomplish and I am able to break my goals in smaller portions. So, I have a smaller goal for each week. As long as I achieve that much in a week; I feel in control and balance. For example; my clients, past and present, are my priority. I like to reach out to each of them every 3 months. So, I break it up in months-weeks-days etc.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart is my honesty. Keeping the deal together is important but never my priority. My priority is always to educate my client so they make an informed decision. I believe that sales would come if you are good at your job. But repeat business comes if you keep the client’s wishes and interests at the top. I have a quite a few proud moments; I have some clients who say to their friends that they should buy a house from me and then start a family. That’s the way to a happy life. Some call me the wikipedia of real estate. My proudest moments are when I am handing over the keys to their new house; or when I am able to get the most amount of money out of their property investments. I think that it has been fairly easy for me. I thoroughly enjoy my work. It is just fun and games. The job comes with challenges; but all I have to think is that nothing ever is permanent. Things change; I will overcome the challenge. With this belief; I am always able to keep moving forward. One of the lessons that comes to my mind is to never underestimate people. Don’t assume that people you are dealing with won’t understand. And not to try and trick anyone. Be honest about your intentions and people would surprise you. What I would like the world to know? – Well, I try and work with only 2 to 3 clients at a time. I work really hard and I am great at research, and negotiation. I am passionate about homeownership and I get excited about every client’s journey of buying or selling a home.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The itinerary would depend on the friend’s interests. San Diego has a lot to offer for every preference. But ok, if I am forced to make an itinerary for a friend then I would go in an organized manner. I would have theme for every day. For example beach day, followed by seafood (they have vegetarian stuff too) picnic. May be a couple of beach days since we have such beautiful beaches. Vivekananda centre followed by Eve Vegan eats. A fun hike like potato chip or something followed by wine and Italian food; or yummy dinner at Stone brewery. Not to forget all the delicious dessert places like Lab dessert where they serve cotton candy burrito. Belmont Park Boardwalk and Ramen. Notice so many references to food; isn’t it all about food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
These are COVID times that we are living in. I give the credit to my family. With staying in place; we spend all our time with our family. If your family is supportive then you would be successful in the most trying times. Loneliness is real and quite common. I am glad to have an amazing husband and lovely kids to keep me company. I also live my life learning and following the teachings of Bhagawad Gita. My favorite lesson is, ‘work is worship’. We can only control our work (our Karma); we cannot control the results. Simple enough for a simple life!!
