We had the good fortune of connecting with Remy Gerstel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Remy, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from Manhattan, New York City, but more specifically, Washington Heights. My background not only impacted my upbringing but made me who I am today. Growing up with a single mom who was an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, showed me just how strong and fearless women are and that we can do it all. She didn’t even know the language, came to America, and raised 3 kids on her own – myself and my 2 brothers. I’m the middle child. My older brother was more like my father figure and as such, the best possible male influence I could have had around. He had such a major hand in helping my mom raise us. They both showed me about the hustle, grind, and New York State of Mind, which taught me my work ethic and pushed me to always be ambitious and want to be an entrepreneur. They showed me how to be the strong, beautiful, fearless, independent, go-getter woman I am today.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Remy G. @iamremyg is a lifestyle & fitness blog where you can find tips and tricks on anything from fitness to living your best life. What sets my page/blog apart is the humble, valuable, unique and real content I give my community. I spend time getting to know my audience and I’m genuinely enthusiastic and pour my heart and soul into everything that I do. My realness and desire to want to impact and empower other women through self-love and authenticity is what inspires me to keep going.
Onyx + Jade. Onyx & Jade is a California-based online fashion retailer that was born in 2019 by my longtime friend Andry and me through what was initially a casual conversation. What sets our boutique apart from others is our mission is to bring together that East coast urban swag and West Coast lifestyle at an affordable price. We believe fashion should be effortless. As a Latina Woman founded business, we hope to empower women to look and feel the best version of themselves with outfits that make them look their best so that women can go out there and kill it. I’m so proud of all that I have done in such a short amount of time being here. I followed my dreams, moved to California, and most importantly I have been able to cultivate the most amazing and loyal community. I just threw my first Pop-Up event for Onyx + Jade and seeing all the beautiful people that came and supported was a very humbling and proud moment for me. I got to where I am today with hard work, staying as consistent as possible, being ambitious, and having dedication. I know that if I put my all and my mind to something I can make it happen and I know that God is always putting me on the right path to helping achieve my success. A major lesson I’ve learned is to always stay true to yourself and believe in yourself. We are unique and special in our own way and we need to share that gift with the world. What I want the world to know about my brand and my story is that anything is possible. Don’t be afraid to dream and don’t be afraid to try new things, you never know where those opportunities or moments can take you.
I want to make my impact on the world, and that’s what Remy G and Onyx + Jade strive for. Whether that is feeling good in the clothes you wear or feeling good in your own skin, I want to help women all over feel as beautiful as they are.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d start the morning off with brunch at Snooze Am Eatery, specifically the La Jolla location. Afterwards, we would take a stroll by Coast Boulevard Park, the Children’s Pool Beach, also right in La Jolla, to see the seals. Fun Fact: Dr. Seuss lived in La Jolla, and got inspiration for some of his books from the unique landscape of this Park. And here are some more of my favorite spots to eat, drink, and enjoy the beautiful scenery that San Diego has to offer:
Drinks: Pacific Beach El Prez is a 3 story Mexican Restaurant where you drink, dance, and watch the sunset.
Dinner in Downtown/The Gaslamp: De Midici is an Italian Restaurant with a delicious menu and one of my favorite spots to eat. Ask for the Steak Diane. It’s an experience and you’ll thank me later.
Night Time: BonFire at Mission Bay Park. Bring some firewood, a blanket, a couple of chairs, some goodies for s’mores, and a speaker to set the vibes for the evening. And you might be able to catch a firework show being that there is a clear view of Sea World!
Hike: Take a Morning drive to Torrey Pines and hike a beautiful beachside trail! Or you can head over to Birch Aquarium for a unique view of San Diego. Be sure to go to the back of the parking lot and look for a small footbridge that will lead you into the trail.
Coronado Beach: Spend the day at the beach and enjoy beautiful celebrity homes, golden sand, and a gorgeous ocean view of Mexico.
Lunch/ Snack: When you start getting hungry you can head over to Lobster West right in Coronado and get the Best Clam Chowder or Lobster Bisque you will ever have.
Dinner: Another one of my favorites Il’Fornaio also in Coronado has some of the best Italian food and offers one of the most beautiful ocean views of Downtown San Diego. The restaurant structure is so beautiful inside and their outdoor patio is exactly where you want to spend your evening.
Workout at Fit Athletic Mission Beach Gym: The workout view is just insane, as well as the clean, modern, huge facility. And did I mention their outdoor workout space with a view as well! Never wanted to go workout so bad in my life.
Silver Strand Beach: Another beach to check out for sure! Always has great parking and is very relaxing, not as packed as some of the other beaches so plenty of room to throw a Frisbie or a football, plenty of space!
Stone Brewery: If you want to experience some of the countryside of San Diego you can head up to Escondido. They have a great variety of different beers. Their outdoor patio garden is something out of a storybook.
Mexico: I tell everyone that comes to visit me BRING YOUR PASSPORT! One of the reasons I moved to San Diego is how close we are to Mexico! Take a 15 min drive to the border, park your car at the outlets, and a short 5-minute walk over the border and you’re there. Grab an Uber and head over to Churrasqueria Do Brasil in Tijuana, MX, and enjoy an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse. The customer service in Mexico is just top-notch, aside from the food! We would then walk around the small tourist area with different bars, restaurants, and pastries, all while mariachi bands are serenading you along the way.
Sunset Cliffs: For a more intimate setting, we would head over to Sunset Cliffs to catch the best Sunset San Diego has to offer. We like to find a nice open spot on the cliffs and set up a picnic so make sure to bring your favorite snacks and drinks to enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Besides my family that I love so much and who loves me and supports me unconditionally no matter where I am and what I am doing, I need to give a major shout-out first and foremost to my loving amazing husband who I like to call my hubba-ger! He’s the man behind the camera most times and always supports all my crazy ideas, believes in me, and is my #1. Also, a special shoutout to an amazing woman, one of my best friends and business partner, Andry. I know that she doesn’t like the spotlight but she has been such a major part of my life that I wanted to shine a light on her anyways with a special thank you. She is an amazing mother, wife, and friend and also one of the reasons why I moved to SD. Being able to build a business with you has been one of the highlights of my life and I wouldn’t want to run it with anyone else. And lastly, none of this would even be possible without my amazing community who have honestly become an extension of my family. They encourage me to step outside my comfort zone and be my most authentic self. I can’t thank you guys enough, so this shoutout is dedicated to you!
