We had the good fortune of connecting with Raylene Crowder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raylene, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing about this industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is how much Grit, Grind, hard work, hustle and growing pains involved when working for yourself in this industry. There’s a HUGE MISCONCEPTION that all we do is play with Hair and Make-up all day. Outsiders see the Glitz and Glamour, We see ART, Problems that we can create solutions for, Passion, dedication and making people look and feel their best.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an independent Hair Artist who specializes in Curly hair. Curly hair in itself is art, so beautiful and diverse. I service all textures of hair from Wavy to Coily and every pattern in between by creating individualized haircuts for every single client who sits in my chair to accentuate their God given beauty. Each appointment is more than just a “haircut” I give my clients my undivided attention and really listen to their wants, needs and goals. I educate my clients during their appointment on everything from Product Knowledge, Styling Application and techniques. I create a individualized plan for them to incorporate into their lifestyle to help lead them on the path of achieving their long term goals. Curly hair takes time and patience. Once a client comes in to see me I tell them ” I am now you Fairy Curl Mother” They know they can come to me with any curly hair questions day or night. I am also a Cosmetology Educator at Bellus Academy in Chula Vista, teaching future professionals Salon Essentials that will be the foundational skills in their career as a beauty professional. I am very proud of my growth as a professional in this industry. It has not been a easy road to get to where I am today. It has taken a lot of growing pains, struggle and determination to get here. There was a point in my early career where I had no clientele and was practically giving services away trying to get my name out there. I felt like quitting many times but each new day I would tell myself to have faith and not give up. These days I am booked and busy and feel blessed beyond measure. My life motto is “Sink or Swim” I am a very determined headstrong woman who will keep pushing through when the going gets tough. I want my kids to learn by my example that dreams can come true through perseverance and hard work, I want them to see you can’t just give up when you face challenges because it’s the people who don’t quit that end up prevailing. I want my kids to look back someday and say ” Wow my Mom was a hard working woman who never gave up” If I could tell the world about my brand and story it would be this: She is a woman of Strength who believes in empowering others to achieve their goals and dreams. I believe in investing in yourself whether that be a new haircut or furthering your education to become a greater you. I am much more than just a Curly hair specialist, I am a Genuine, authentic, unique individual who loves sharing my knowledge and passion with others. I love to see others happy and successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is so funny because my best friend does live out of town and when she comes into town (Pre-Covid) days we would definitely have to go to Esquina Vintage Coffee shop for an iced ” The City’ coffee in National City, go grab Tacos from Las Cuatro Milpas in Barrio Logan and cruise the neighborhood admiring the culture. For a night out on the town we would definitely have to go to King and Queen Cantina in Little Italy. From my view point the most fun, interesting, exciting people and places to check out are places rooted in family and culture. They are the most beautiful, authentic and truest. There’s a beauty in staying true to your roots.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
