We had the good fortune of connecting with Rafeal Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rafeal, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Hmmmmmmm what do I think about risk? I am firm believer that the higher the risk the higher the reward. Wayne Gretzky Said we only miss 100% of the shots we don’t take. I’d rather take the shot with the hope of making it through practice and training verses not taking it at all. I think we look at risk as though it can only lead to danger rather than seeing the opportunities it can lead to. When Steve Jobs quit his job working for Atari to start Apple. I definitely don’t think he focused on the risk, I am almost positive he saw all the opportunities that laid in front of him. I see risk as an opportunity to bring my vision to life. It was a risk for me to launch my event planning company and it was a risk for me to leave my corporate job and run my company full time. Although the risk were high the opportunities it presented were momentous . Taking that risk changed my life because it taught me how to be fearless. Being fearless has created a pathway for me to reach my goals and and achieve all of my dreams.
What should our readers know about your business?
Well what can I say, I am a lover of creation. Event and wedding planning to me is the art of creating an idea and bringing it to life. Most people don’t realize the beauty in it until they experience it as a planner or designer. I think watching my clients face the day of their event is what really brings me pure joy. They are so amazed that the idea they had blossomed and came into fruition that they smile from ear to ear. I remember when I first started, I made so many mistakes from pricing to client experience, to how my team operated the day of the event. OMG it was a wreck lol but through trial and error, educational courses, and coaching, I was able to overcome all of those mistakes. Believe me it was for the best because I would not have a business today operating the way I did. Although, I can create in chaos, I never want the atmosphere I create to feel chaotic. It should be peaceful, joyful, uplifting, and harmonious. So, developing better systems and changing my client experience was an absolute must and I noticed once that changed I started to receive more business.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Listen, I would not be here today if it wasn’t for my tribe. I am truly blessed to say that Cherished Moments success is a result of a collective group of individuals who believe in the vision. So I have to shout out my Cherished Moments Tribe: Conchie, Alanna, Kandace, Vanessa, Pheli, Ashley, Danielle, & Nia. These women have either worked for free, listened to me vent, counseled me, helped me build my business, or supported me and stuck with me through all my failures and mistakes. Without their unconditional support, I have no idea where Cherished Moments would be today. So from the bottom of my heart and from the top of my lungs, I am screaming thank you and I love you & there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. My mentor, couselor, and friend Frank Oliver taught me that you have to celebrate those who have helped you get to your destination. He said you never forget what they poured into you and what they sacrificed whether it was time, money, their personal engagements. I took that advice to heart which is why I have paid them before I paid myself which is why I always call them first when an opportunity presents itself which why I stay up late nights to perfect my craft so I can compensate them on the level they deserve.
I have to shout out the love of my life Marquise Henderson because he always challenges me to give my best at all times. He challenges me to turn my weaknesses into strengths and to evolve as a woman and CEO. The support he gives is unlike no other and I am so blessed to have him.
