We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel O’Neal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The story of how Wick + Bloom Candle Co. came to be is a comical one. I have been with my fiance for almost 6 years. I have watched him have various hobbies that he was always so passionate about. The most notable being surfing and working out. He had this undeniable fire for these two things that I so badly wanted for myself. Something that makes me want to get out of bed early in the morning. Something that could potentially merge into a career so that everyday I could wake up knowing I would spending my day working on something I truly love and enjoy. That is when I found out about the carcinogenic chemicals in a lot of my own candles I had in my home. Even from some top brands in the US that I called my favorite. I have always loved crafts and being hands on. That is when I thought to myself “why can’t I make my own candles for my own home without all the extra gunk that isn’t good for our own bodies to breathe in”. After endless research and months of trial and error–I finally nailed it! I was so excited to have conquered the art of candle pouring and have found recipes that work for me–that doesn’t involve phthalates or parabens. I was beyond passionate about this creation that I knew I had to share it with others so they too could have a safer option for their home. That is when Wick + Bloom Candle Co. was born!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a speech-language pathologist by day working with adults with traumatic brain injuries, head and neck cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and strokes. After I come home from work is usually when I find time to dedicate towards candles. Is it easy being a SLP and candle artisan? No. Would I have it any other way? Definitely not! I want the world to know that if there is something you have always wanted to do but you’re afraid of failing–do it!! No one will care if you fail so just do it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question! I have lists in my phone of the best places to eat and visit in SD that I have been adding to for 2 years. If you have a friend in town visiting, here are my best San Diego recommendations: I would start the day off at my favorite breakfast spot, Cafe Vahik. They have the best veggie omelette or lox bagel! The best thing to do is get your food to go and walk down to Windansea beach. After enjoying some breakfast and an amazing view of one of the most scenic SoCal beaches, I would recommend getting a quick workout in at Studio Barre in Bird Rock. If feeling like you need some extra caffeine after, head over to Wayfarer just down the street. It wouldn’t hurt to pop in to Bird Rock Surf Shop for a little shopping while you’re in the area. If you have a dog, it’s a must to take them to Del Mar dog beach! This beach is a dog’s paradise. After soaking up the sun with the pups, head back to Downtown La Jolla to make it in time for happy hour at Isolas or head to Pacific Beach to eat fish tacos at Oscars Mexican Seafood. After dinner, head down to Coronado for sunset. That would be my perfect day in San Diego!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Starting a business is never easy. Starting a business with no prior business background is even harder. I have had the pleasure of watching multiple female entrepreneurs walk this walk and talk the talk that has inspired me to persevere and know I, too, can do it! The females around me that inspire me are, Krista with Krista Schumacher Art, Brittney with Sullovin Knots, Jess with Honest Thrift Studio and Garden Coffee, Samantha with Ember & Iris, Alex with Kamper’s Kitchen, Brooke with StelGal, Hollie with Mama Releaf, and Brooklyn with Blooms by Brooklyn. I don’t know if some of these women listed even know that I look up to them but I certainly do!
