We had the good fortune of connecting with Patty Tolentino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patty, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite affirmation to say before I create some magic is “I am aware of my abilities to create art. I am greater than than my critiques”. I am my own worst critic sometimes since I always aim for 100% perfection. This affirmation allows me to gain confidence in my skills and creativity before I start the makeup application. It helps me focus on my purpose, which is to enhance beauty and create art. I took a long break from makeup artistry, so when I began to book clients again my confidence was really low. I felt like I lost my skill and that my work was not good enough. While writing in my journal one day these two affirmations stood out to me the most. I began to say these affirmations out loud before going to a gig and it’s been helpful in easing my stress before, during and after a makeup gig.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a makeup artist who enhances the beauty of others and creates art. Most of my work focuses on natural glowy looks with a hint of a bold color used on the eyes, lips or cheeks. Most of the time my clients want a more natural subtle look that includes neutral colors, but when I have the freedom to play around I go towards bold colors. Although I’ve been doing makeup since 2015 I don’t really consider myself a professional at what I do, yet. Everyday I’m learning something new when it comes to techniques and trends. I came across a few challenges last year that affected my mindset and the future of my artistry career. When I decided to take a break to prioritize my mental health and education I did not prioritize the continuation of my artistry education, updating my portfolio and social media account. This affected my confidence in my artistry skills and I felt I had no chance in getting booked since I was not updating my portfolio. To top that off my schedule was hectic since I am a full time student, so that led to more anxiety and second guessing if I should continue to pursue this passion of mine. When I was looking for collaborations and opportunities to put my skills back to work I had a hard time finding gigs that would fit my schedule or getting booked. The thought of possibly not continuing this journey was heartbreaking because makeup artistry allows me to express myself and bring my ideas to life on a variety of faces and textures that are different to mine, and it’s nice to have a job that I enjoy. The way I was able to overcome this challenge was to start managing my time and stop making excuses for myself. I altered my schedule in order to have days where I dedicate it to my art and when I come across an important opportunity I make sure I have a backup plan in order to fit that gig in my schedule. I stopped making excuses about not being able to continue to pursue my career and started promoting my artistry business and reaching out to other creatives to collaborate with. I’ve had my fair share of challenges but I always pull through and don’t give up. I fight for my passions, and everyone should do so!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going on hikes and being surrounded by nature. So if my best friend was visiting the area I would take her to my favorite hiking spots which are Elfin Forest, Mission Trails and Palomar Mountain. I’ll make sure to throw in some snacks, water and most importantly watermelon. I love taking watermelon when I go hiking because it’s so sweet and hydrating! These hiking places I mentioned are a beautiful place to go and let the beauty of nature comfort you, although you might feel tired during and after the hike it is definitely worth it because of the beautiful sights.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out goes to one of the best fashion stylist in San Diego, Leslie (@styledbyrealmrs.b)! She has been supportive, encouraging and loving each time we collaborate together. She has helped me find exciting opportunities such as the casting for Fashion Week San Diego and recommending me to other creatives. She supports my work and I appreciate that because it keeps me motivated to continue this artistry journey.
