We had the good fortune of connecting with Ovais Malik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ovais, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Trying to build a business is incredibly challenging but starting one in the entertainment industry is basically the house betting against you. I’d argue that there’s no other industry as cut throat and everyone’s replaceable at the snap of a finger. There’s no one way to see success in Voiceover, but in my experience, it helps to study your craft and then as cliche as it sounds, sticking with it even when it feels like nothing’s happening and you feel like quitting. The drive and ambition to keep pushing and try different things until something “sticks” is something many businesses have seen success with but even more have fallen because of. Lastly, as simple as it sounds, having a strong support system around you. That can literally make or break your odds of success. Last but not least-don’t have a plan B

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a multilingual voice actor who’s been in the industry for 12 years. Having the luxury of lending my voice to Video Games, Movie Trailers, Commercials, Narrations ADR (Audio Dialogue Replacement) and more in English, Urdu and Hindi has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done I always knew that performance art and creating was my strength, which is why I began playing music over 2 decades ago. As a child, I’d watch my favorite cartoons and TV shows and remember being so captivated by the voices of those characters. I told myself it would be amazing to be able to bring characters to life with my own twist. The transition from musician to voice actor is actually one that I’ve found many fellow voice actors in my field have made. Being a drummer has helped me learn the rhythm of a spot and understand the cadence, much like a song. There’s a big misconception that doing voiceover is somehow simply “reading words off a page” and that’s the furthest thing from the truth! So much goes into understanding the script or “copy”. Who is this message for? How many people are you sharing this with? What is the purpose of your sharing your story with them? The list goes on. If there’s no context to your delivery, it falls flat and people can pick up on it. When you’re analyzing copy, and you don’t connect with it and just read it, it sounds insincere, inauthentic and disingenuous. In my journey as a voice actor, every day is new. I’m still learning and growing and I’ll occasionally have people reach out to me asking for advice, which I’m happy to give. The voiceover community is unlike any I’ve ever been a part of. It’s literally the opposite of screen actors in so many ways. People are so willing to help and even guide you when done in a respectful way. I’ve known actors to recommend other actors for a role that would be better fit than they are! That’s absolutely unheard of! My best advice on how someone could get into the business would be to start out by taking an acting or improv class to see if it’s even something you really want to do. Don’t go spending a bunch of money on really expensive gear! Put the time in, get some coaching if you’ve never done any sort of acting. You don’t need to spend 10 years doing it but you have to be able to take a cold read (a brand new, never seen before read) and make it your own on the spot. Audit a class, it’s free and you get to be a fly on the wall and see if it’ll work for you or not! Believe in yourself and go for it! You don’t know what you’re capable of until you truly commit and dive deep into your passion. If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day!

My brand – “Ovais Malik Voiceover” is one that I’m very proud of. I’ve spent a very long time building and cultivating relationships with different clients and folks in the industry. My goal is to always make sure the client gets the best product as quickly as possible. Awesome customer service and excellent communication are 2 of my biggest priorities when working one-on-one with them! I want them to come back to me and remember how easy it was to work with me and how I was able to solve their problem. I’ve never shied away from going above and beyond for them to make sure they’re truly 100% happy! The goal is not to get a gig. What you ultimately want is return business. I’ve worked for clients both big and small and have been fortunate enough to lend my voice worldwide to brands like Toyota, MetLife, AMS, Englity, NCSOFT, Syrian American Medical Society and many more. I love what I do and I convey that in the work my clients trust me with. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in the Greater Los Angeles area comes with a lot of benefits. Some of those include excellent food, amazing outdoors, tons of things to do for tourists, etc. I personally would take them to a local spot in my town of Simi Valley called The Greek House II. This place has won award after award for having some of the best Greek food money can buy. It’s a newly renovated restaurant that’s truly a hidden gem for most and the owner is as nice a guy as you’ll ever meet! We’d then go to the world famous Ronald Reagan Presidential Library which has a huge Air Force One museum inside. If we wanna cool off, we’d go to one of our beautiful beaches in Malibu and Ventura or if you want to branch out even further, there’s Pismo Beach, Laguna Beach. This list goes on and on with beaches! We have beautiful scenic hiking all throughout Simi Valley and then if you wanted to go see some of the hot spots for music, TV and everything entertainment, we’d go to the city of angels, Los Angeles. You can check out the world famous walk of fame, go to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, go catch a Dodger Game check out the beautiful Griffith Observatory and Getty Museum, and maybe even see a couple of stars while you’re doing it! The opportunities are endless!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner in crime of 13 years, Adriana. She’s truly been my rock and has given me unwavering support, particularly when I’ve had my biggest challenges. I’m forever grateful to her for this. I think having a healthy support system plays a critical role in your success not only in business, but i in life. I think about all the opportunities that friends of mine have had and the common factor in whether they did well or not was having a good solid foundation in the way of support.

Oddly enough though, Oddly enough, I have to give a shout out to all the people that DIDN”T believe in me as well because they ignited a fire in me that made me relentless in pursuing my passion.
