We had the good fortune of connecting with Omar Davila and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Omar, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I would like to think of myself as a calculated risk taker. I weigh out my options, analyze what the pros and cons are, factor in my experience and then decide if I will take the risk or not. One thing I learned very early on is that you cannot shy away from failure. Success typically takes risks, failure, and the ability to bounce back and learn from those failures. Taking risks has definitely put me into some uncomfortable and stressful situations. However these also gave me the opportunity to grow and mature both as a person and as a professional. Since I was a teenager I had people telling me what I couldn’t do, had I not taken any risks I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an accomplished Breaker, dancing has always been my passion and outlet, it’s my art. I learned to express myself through breaking before I found the self-confidence to speak my mind. It gave me a voice, it taught me hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and determination. All of these life skills that I would then transfer over into professional career.
Reflecting back, after all I have accomplished as an artist. The thing I’m most proud of is putting myself into a position where I can give back to the art and culture that provided me with a platform and opportunity. My mission now is to continue to push the integrity of break culture and provide opportunities to others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When in Austin! Make sure to visit Taco Joint – my favorite is El Cubano! For a one of a kind experience, make sure you visit Native, there’s always something great going on whether it’s a quick coffee and business meeting, looking to grab a drink, dance, or go to an exclusive party, it’s the place to be! I love running, and Austin as a great trail and view of downtown on Lady Bird Lake! Go up to Barton Springs, take a dive in the natural spring! Make sure to see what’s happening at Waterlook park, from family fun activities to concerts! Lastly, make sure to grab some Blacks BBQ!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, a huge shoutout to my mother. Who supported my dreams when others saw no value in what I was doing/attempting.
Roger Davis who was a mentor to many of us at a young age, providing us with a safe environment to practice and grow our skillset.
Romeo Navarro who provided us with a platform to showcase our talent to the world.
My crews, Friend 4 Rhythm, Jive Turkeys, and MZK Worldwide for providing me with a foundation as a dancer.
Ness and Tyquan for believing in me and helping shape me into a leader.
There really are so many people that I can list here, I’ve made it a point to tell them each.
