We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikka Blunt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikka, how do you think about risk?
To most people, risk means ‘danger’, and that makes sense since that’s the truest definition. I made a decision at 18 to bungee jump in Australia, and then a few years later to go skydiving and paragliding. Let me preface this with an important fact… I was afraid of heights, excruciatingly and embarrassingly afraid, so there was an inflated sense of risk for me. With my heart monitor watch on, I captured a 166bpm dauntless high during my first fall. I discovered that not only did I survive, but I was able to see the world from a much different vantage point as I soared, floated and gently bounced back to the earth. These moments were recalled when I made my first decision to create and invest in my own business. The biggest risk in stepping out of an airplane was death. The reward was living fully and eliminating a fear that dominated me. When I face a decision that accompanies risk, I go through the same process of risk/reward + decision + leap. Whatever the decision, once you leap, you must be all-in. If I were to have jumped off the bungee platform and quickly turned back in regret, I could have injured myself. Bringing your entire self out of a place of ‘comfort’ can feel risky, it can raise your heart rate, create doubt, and cause intense fear. Those are the moments to remember why you made the choice you made, and to move fervently forward in that direction. Do not reach back for the platform, but open your eyes, remain aware and enjoy the view. The greatest achievements and most memorable moments in life and in business will only be those that required risk.

What should our readers know about your business?
We are a customer-centric company, and we’re passionate about the service that we provide. When we decided to take our business online during the pandemic, we became fanatical about increasing the value for our local customers. Our founders mask-up and personally deliver all local San Diego orders either same-day or next-day. We believe that purposeful attention is fundamental in the business of business, so we are deliberate about our work. All of our products are handmade in small-batches and include a personal hand-written thank you note in each order. Our staff is intentional about their craft. I should repeat that… our staff is intentional about their craft. This means a lot because on a regular basis, people will find their way into the DirtFood kitchen because of the joy, singing and all the positive vibes that draws them in. I believe you can taste that joy in all of our products.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re visiting San Diego for a few days, there are some hidden and well-known local gems that must be attended! For starters, you must stay in the Beach Village at the iconic and legendary Hotel Del Coronado. It’s a historic national landmark which has hosted celebrities, royalty and US presidents for generations, and recently renovated with an Italian piazza to blow your mind, which should be opening soon. Alternatively, Paradise Point in Mission Bay. This 44-acre island retreat is tucked away and is as full-service as it comes! Great restaurants, shopping, surf lessons, bike rentals, etc. If you’ve got a family, or if you want one – either the Del or Paradise Point will make you a hero. For activities, San Diego is obviously lined by some of the most beautiful beaches, and you cannot go wrong with any of them. If the pups are joining you, I recommend Dog Beach in Pacific Beach. The San Diego Zoo is world famous for good reason, our zoo has over 4,000 animals on over 100 acres, even housing and rehabilitating endangered species. Next to the zoo is Balboa Park, and one of San Diego’s most beloved treasures. The museums, eateries, lily ponds and botanical gardens will have your Instagram smiling. San Diego is diverse and colorful and proud, and we are home to some of the best local eateries in the world. Tacos! When in San Diego, find a great taco joint. If you’re in Ocean Beach soaking up the sunshine, grab an adult beverage from Wonderland, then walk over to Mike’s Taco Club for the best taco you will ever have, ever. If you want to get some local shopping and dining in, Sea Port Village will give you a great sense of San Diego. For breakfast or brunch, our favorite spots to take visitors is Richard Walker’s Pancake House in the Gaslamp for their Dutch Baby Pancakes. You won’t eat again until dinner, and you’ll be smiling all day. Otherwise, Isabel’s in Pacific Beach for literally anything at all on their entire menu. Old Town San Diego also has a full day of shopping, eating and museums that should not be missed. They also have a local pizza stop called Pizza Bella where you can get chocolate pizza… yep, chocolatey and cheesy and, you’re welcome. If pizza is your jam, then you must head back over to Pacific Beach and take in a Milano pizza experience at Ambrogio 15. Better than the pizza that we had in Milan, this place makes the most mouth-watering thin crust. Their ingredients, holistic approach to food and sustainable farming makes you feel so good about what you just gorged yourself on.
