We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassandra Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassandra, how do you think about risk?
Risk is reward misspelled. You certainly have to develop that muscle to step out on faith with no guarantee of the desired outcome. But when I think of the other option of someone outside of me, determing my life path , well that is simply unfathomable to me. Risk has cost me a lot over my life time. However I would not have the life I do without my willingness to leap without looking.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Ova Media Group is a multimedia platform with several verticals. Our holdings include a group of niche tv channels , which include Ova TV, Ova Viva and the Ova News Blast, Currently available on the Ova Media App, Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV and smart tv’s. Additionally we send our signal to 4 over the air channels (antenna Tv) in TX, GA, OH and Louisiana. We have a music division distributed by Universal Music Grouo and Sony Orchard respectively and are about to launch a series of podcasts through Iheart Radio. I’m most proud of being able to make a meaningful contribution to the narrative of women of color. We have varied pasts and diverse stories that need to be told. We need representatives that show us and the rest of the world who we are. daughters, Mother’s, sisters, wives …our hopes and dreams. TV has been the medium  in which we are exposed to people who are not like us. It’s important we get the opportunity to show who we are not,  some one dimensional charicuture. We went through a lot of trial and error and money to figure out the best way to reach an audience. Our business is ad driven and dependent on viewership to power the whole brand. It’s a crowded landscape with regard to content so trying to provide an entertaining line up first and then to educate and elevate later. If we can capture an audience with one show then we can build from there. I am a content producer first and foremost . My career has been largely all about creating a catalog as I knew that was the way to have any longevity in entertainment business. My business partner leased the first channel here in Los Angeles so I loaned my catalog to the network and we began running a 24 hour feed. It was an analog channel, so we had to learn how to remotely deliver the channel to the broadcast center. Create a playlist, develop channel branding. Develop a sales team to introduce our brand to the market and in the mean time the expenses were racking up with no clear indication of when or if we would turn a profit. I give my partner credit because she was determined to keep the channel on air so we could find our footing. The first year was all trial and error as it was not easy to convince people to spend money on your vision. We were a free over the air channel with no ratings and a signal you needed an antenna to get. So all uphill battles . After year one and a rotation of various staff members we began integrating OTT platforms which helped us track our analytics. That gave us real time data as to who was actually watching. We rebranded the channel as Ova Tv and began to hone in on our who exactly our core audience is. Many times I wanted to quit but we stuck it out year 2 we found our stride and more carriage for the channel. We have made some strategic partnerships to help us take our brand globally. Now you can find Ova TV on channels in the UK, Africa and the S. pacific. We now get views from all corners of the world and we are utilizing our soundstage to produce new content. Which brings me back to my producer roots back in my Paramount Pictures heyday. Ova Media Group is a not just a network we are a village for her by her. We like to call her place.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This list is Pre-covid list. Neptune’s Net so they get to experience the PCH and the views of Malibu and the Pacific Ocean. Universal Studios as I feel this is the theme park for grownups. A trip to  Lake Hollywood so I can take their picture with the Hollywood Sign over their shoulder. Any of the Mulholland lookout offerthe best views of the city at night. Darrow”s  in Carson for the best Cajun Food in the city. The Hollywood Walk of Fame for literal stars and to people watch. The most interesting folks gather here. The Hollywood Bowl for any concert , you bring the wine and enjoy. Lastly sailing in Redondo Beach and a walk down the strand.
