We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicklas Brandrup and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicklas, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks has never come natural for me. It is not something I enjoy doing often and I do not feel that I am particularly good at it. However, there is a mindset that I am working on that I believe is helping me to make strides with risk in my life and business.
Enough entrepreneurship books and courses will advise you to delegate the things you are not good at. This could be interpreted as “I am not a strong writer” or “I am not good at Microsoft Excel” so I will give the task to someone else who is and move on.
But aside from outsourcing, there is a higher-level opportunity to engage. I aim to surround myself with people who have strengths in the areas that I have weaknesses. This feeds into the sort of business partners I look for. This approach not only fulfills the needs of the business, but it also exposes me to new ways of thinking and opportunities to grow and improve myself. I am fortunate to have great synergy with my family. For instance, Jan who is my father and co-founder of Neurogan CBD, is excellent at risk taking whereas I am not. We balance each other.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Originally from Denmark, my family and I take a lot of pride in our heritage and we have committed to incorporating our Scandinavian values into our business. The goal has always been to have a direct positive impact on people and their lives. This has led us to founding our current company, Neurogan CBD, which offers the highest potency CBD in the United States.
We first established a cGMP and FDA registered production facility that was lined with state-of-the-art equipment. Next, we developed a strong relationship with a local farm that harvests organic, cannabinoid rich hemp to be able to deliver a seed to shelf experience. After many vigorous hours spent in our facility, we perfected our processes and developed an artisan extracted CBD oil that is high potency, full spectrum, and efficacious. Together, our growing ideas and drive to meet the wellness needs of the public have created momentous progress in our innovation pipeline. We have very exciting plans to expand our product line this year to include: CBG Gummies, CBN Gummies, Delta-8 Gummies, Delta-9 Gummies, Delta-10 Gummies, CBG Oils, CBN Oils, Delta-8 Oils, Delta-9 Oils, Delta-10 Oils, and more.
There have been many obstacles that I have faced as an entrepreneur and challenges specific to the CBD industry. The CBD space is filled with complications because the FDA has yet to set regulatory and compliance standards for the industry. Challenges have existed with advertising, rules and regulations, platforms, and negative stigma.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned from these challenges is to not be afraid to pivot if the initial plan is not working. Even if you have spent an immense amount of time developing a plan (that is no longer working) do not be afraid to change course because that is better than pushing forward with a plan that is showing signs that it may fail. Take it as an opportunity to learn. Understand why the plan did not work and apply these valuable lessons to the next experience.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is a lifestyle city. With quick access to the ocean, mountains, and trails, there is truly a lifetime’s worth of outdoor activity a person could dive into. My visiting best friend would have a wide range selection to choose from that will satisfy their taste for adventure, including options to hike, bike, surf, and rock climb. Afterwards, the good times can always be topped off at one of the great local breweries or diverse cuisine restaurants in town.
An ideal day spent with a visiting friend may look like a morning bike ride that begins on the Solana Beach Coastal Rail Trail and continues for extra miles onto the newly expanded pedestrian path of Highway 101, complete with epic views of the ocean. Following the stoke, we could eventually store our bikes back at our car, switch them for surfboards, and paddle out for the glassy waves at Cherry Hill. I always like to end a soaked and salty session with a shared meal. A favorite restaurant of mine right now is Birdseye Kitchen in Encinitas, which has a menu of Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese food that is made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients and can be tailored for amazing vegan options.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success is possible because of my family. When we moved to the United States, we brought with us memories, dreams, values, and a lineage of over a thousand years of hemp knowledge. My father, brother, and I took what we had strong experience in, which were the ways quality hemp could support a person’s health, and established Neurogan CBD together from the ground up. There has been blood, sweat, and tears shed and major challenges working together. But I would not ask for it to be with anyone else.
