We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Stuart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Morgan, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After my time as a student-athlete at the University of Washington, I couldn’t help but feel that I had stepped on campus unprepared for that was to come. I had had the best coaching, I had come from a supportive family, but I had never failed before and it hit me hard. Defense Club was created for kids growing up in sport who want to learn strategies in the mental game before they might need it the most. For me, not being able to train my self-talk or to be aware of the stories I was telling myself was detrimental to, not only my performance, but to my mental health as well. I came up with the idea for my business after feeling the effects of making myself my own worst enemy on the field.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my business as a coach in the softball world. I still train girls ages 8-18 in infield skills, but as my business has evolved to include more online courses, connection, and conversation, Defense Club was born so I could give athletes what I believe is really missing in youth training: mental skills and strategies. Since I am mostly known as a softball instructor, the transition to mental coach hasn’t been easy. Players, parents, and coaches expect me to give them all the answers with videos of drills or a personal lesson. Mental training, in general, is more like playing the long-game. Maybe you won’t see immediate results and most people know they want just softball instruction from me, but I know there is so much more that can help their daughters. Defense Club is what I wish I knew when I was growing up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Salt & Straw is a must

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shoutout to the coaches who have supported me throughout my personal journey. Especially to my first coaches, my parents.
