We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miriam, what makes you happy? Why?
Creating, coming up with designs ideas ways to express my culture in a t shirt or a sticker. Making people laugh and having them like/appreciate what I do. Most importantly doing something for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is trying to keep what I remember as a child/teen relevant. Not everyone knows what some of the words or phrases mean, but that’s because a lot of us don’t use those words in our daily lives. My goal is to try to keep these phrases present with the younger generations and make the rest of us go, “oh my god, I remember that!” I’m excited about the future and growing, being able to make this a full time job and seeing how far I can go.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend is from the East coast and every time she comes back I try to introduce her to what’s new in Logan and re-visit our favorite places. We would start with breakfast at cuatro milpas and dinner at Ciccia, we keep bragging about it all the time! Then we would go visit Claudia at Sew Loka and catch up. Cross the Coronado bridge, either by car or ferry and ride bikes, maybe stop by the beach. Burgers at the Balboa, they are soo delicious and tacos at El Gordo she loves it there. We can’t forget about balboa park, a total gem! Show off my skates at the Grossmont Derby and hopefully have her skate as well. We have to get subs from Grab & Go in Mission Hills and catch up with my friend Carolina and once we’ve finished up there go to Vero Cafe for some yummy gelato. We would finish up with her assisting me for a walk the block event on Saturday and having her walk around with my boyfriend to check out all the cool businesses, vendors and new murals in Logan.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A while back, I was homeless for a little bit and was able to crash at my boyfriends. It was really tough times, I was working part time and going to school full time. I had just started college again with a new major, Fashion Merchandising. My family was not very supportive of me starting school AGAIN, but my boyfriend just wanted me to do what made me happy. One of my courses was Drawing and as difficult as it was I must admit I got pretty good but never really showed anyone other than classmates and him. One night while I was trying to go to sleep and he was coming back from a night out I heard him open the bedroom door and reach for my sketch book. He opens it and begins to show his friend and starts telling him how good I am, that whole time I pretended to be asleep and was in tears at how proud he was of me and how much he believed in me. When I decided to start my business he was my number one supporter he helped me financially, emotionally and he was there with me every time he could vending. He would tell his family and friends about my shop and I wasn’t even sure about what I was doing, or confident in my work, but he knew I could do it. To this day he gets home from work and sits out there with me, helps me weed vinyl and supports and Believes in me, this shoutout is dedicated to him.
