We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Villalobos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Some would say I’m not afraid of taking risks but that’s not really how I see it. I’m totally afraid of risks but I’m more afraid of NOT taking risks. I’ve never wanted to live a ‘safe’ and quaint life. I want joy, laughter and I to live a full life! There is so much to do and see in in this crazy world and I’ve learned that all the really important stuff in life requires risk… marriage, kids, travel, buying a house. I mean these days there’s risk in just driving your car… Hello So Cal traffic! In 2013 when I started Sandra Michelle Artistry I had taken 3 years off from doing hair and makeup to have kids. I had zero background or education in Business and I had just relocated to a new area where I knew no one! I had ZERO connections and I knew it would be a challenge to create something meaningful. I also knew that nothing in life that’s worthwhile comes easily. My goal was to create a bridal beauty business built on kindness, respect and reliability. I wanted my brides to not only look beautiful on their wedding day but to also enjoy the entire process and to make the beauty part of wedding planning easy. Through these last 8 years I have met goal after goal and along the way I have met some incredible clients, fellow artists and wedding vendors. I’ve made mistakes & learned from them. I’ve pivoted and re-imagined what could be more times than I can count. I’ve had some truly amazing moments and witnessed so much love. Sandra Michelle Artistry is more than I could have ever dreamed of and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me and the other artists on my team.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a hair stylist, I love a soft romantic look. As a makeup artist I love neutrals and subtle pops of mauves. I like a little drama on the eyes while keeping the skin soft and glowy! I strive for a youthful and timeless look. I want my brides to look back in 10, 20 or even 50 years and still love the way they looked on their wedding day. My style as an artist has changed so much over the years and I love to spend time every year expanding my knowledge as an artist and business owner with live and on-line education. In addition to formal education, I spend a lot of time researching new and unique products as well as new techniques and trends. Keeping up with current looks is so important but I love to put a modern spin on a classic look, keeping my clients current but not overly trendy. I used to compare my work with others in the industry… the trend setters… but a few years ago I realized that clients are drawn to my work not because I imitate others work but because of the skills and knowledge that I’ve acquired over the past 19 years and how I implement that into each look!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to recognize my husband, Fernando. He’s walked this path with me and supported me unconditionally. I can’t count how many sacrifices he’s made to allow me the ability of living out my dream. I’m so glad to experience this life with him by my side and I can’t thank him enough!
