We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Graham Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
In a word- FOCUS. Obviously it’s a term that is widely used and probably to the point of being cliche… “Stay Focused on Your Goals”, “Focus On the Task At Hand”… and all variations similar. Those are all fine, but what I think a more important attribute of entrepreneurial success is knowing what to focus on and when. Over the last 24+ years of building and consulting businesses, I’ve come to find that you need to be able to think in terms of Macro and Micro focus. Being able to create systems and ways of gathering measurable market feedback in granular up-close detail so you can make data-based decisions and not just emotionally driven ones is vital. But you also have to be able to “zoom out” and view things at the macro level in order to see the entire ecosystem that your business interacts with and how it’s positioned in the larger marketplace. Kind of like an outside the fishbowl perspective. I’ve seen so many would-be great business people get so focused on goals or sales objectives that they go blind to how the market is responding and if they are truly even in alignment with what their audience wants. Having the ability to analyze and problem solve in high levels of detail, while at the same time being able to see things 5 steps ahead- has been a hard won skill set. It’s one that I now lean on every day in life and business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, living in Southern California certainly provides an endless array of options. I think that, along with our weather is what makes this part of the country so special. One of my favorite experiences over the years has been the coastal road trips. Starting out in San Diego and day by day working your way up the coastline presents some really great sightseeing along with phenomenal dining options. if someone was new to the area, I think this would be a great way to give them a good view about what the Southern California lifestyle is all about.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without question it comes down to being blessed with great parents. Throughout childhood they where always highly supportive of my entrepreneurial exploits, from mowing lawns, selling candy and lemonade from the front yard, all the typical kid stuff- all the way into my “real” businesses as I got older. Their belief in me helped instill the confidence that I think is critical for any entrepreneur. That’s what it’s all about- you can’t be scared to try. My parents always had my back 100%.
