We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Najor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite affirmation is “I Radiate Love.” I love LOVE so much and I believe my purpose is to show love to others and to myself. I am not sure there is any other real reason that I am here. This affirmation helps me to remain open hearted and to receive and give love rather than giving into bitterness and resentment.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and my private practice is in Hillcrest, CA. I think the thing that sets me apart is radical genuineness. I remember being in graduate school and being concerned that I would not hit the mark with “professional looks” and all. Then I realized none of that matters if my heart is truly in this. I am an avid mindfulness practitioner and I believe that my Clients can truly feel how present and passionate I am. My goal with my Clients is empowerment. They know I have so much faith in them and trust that they can pull through any adversity. I am just really proud that I am actively practicing the same DBT skills as my Clients are. I also work at Centered Ground which is an adherent DBT program in Carlsbad. It was a very long road for me to get to this point in my career. I have gratitude every single day for what I have. I was basically a high school and college failure. School did not come easy to me at all until I got to a certain age and something clicked. Grad school was where I excelled because I really care about people and psychology. I think what helped me overcome the challenges of taking the LMFT road was that I realized my trajectory did not have to look like anybody else’s in terms of timelines and age. I didn’t start grad school until I was 30. It ended up taking me until I was 37 years old to start my private practice. Again, Mindfulness is what has really saved me. Not being so focused on the future or nostalgia that I can’t even see the beauty that is right in front of me. That’s not who I want to be. I want to share my gift of emotional intelligence with others. Nonjudgmental stance has also been a big part of what I have been practicing in my life. It changed the way I see my body, food, and people. I think having a fulfilling life outside of my career is what really helps me be present and effective in the room with someone. Ever since Covid hit, I have had to re-invent myself in a way. My life was previously focused on my career but also on live music and playing shows. I have become much more outside oriented and have taken up a myriad of activities that have brought so much joy to my life. The ocean has really changed the course for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here are my favorite spots in the city: La Jolla Cove for snorkeling, Marine Room for snorkeling, Stan’s Beach in Coronado for surfing, Black’s Beach The Casbah for live shows, Spicy City for Szechuan cuisine, The Friendly for my favorite cheeseburger, TJ Oyster Bar for fish tacos and mariscos, Tribute Pizza- not just pizza but amazing foccacia and cheese boards, Las Cuatros Milpas is important for some dope, Mexican Cowboy Star- best bread pudding of my life and steak! Yakitori Taisho- incredible yakitori, Dumpling Inn Balboa Park for blowing bubbles & picnics, Mitch’s and Point Loma Seafood Starlite for wonderful food and bev, Reanimated Records for vinyl goods, De Anza cove and Fiesta Island for biking, Torrey Pines Reserve Cabrillo national park for ocean views, Self Realization Gardens in Encinitas for meditation.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my Clients, my Mom, Dad, and brothers, my close girlfriends Cyndi, Amy, Meghan, Nicole, Kelsey, Edie, the Sarahs, my boss Dr. Angela Klein, my bandmates, my snorkel buds, my tennis pals, and myself. Without all of these people, I would not have the bandwidth to do what I love as a Therapist.
