We had the good fortune of connecting with Maryanne Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maryanne, how do you think about risk?
Being safe is pretty “dangerous”. Risk taking has been very essential and extremely instrumental throughout my entire life. I grew up in communist Bulgaria and when i came to the US i didn’t speak much English, I didn’t have any family or friends, I didn’t have any money either. I became a single parent in just 8 months after my arrival and my kids were a toddler and infant at the time. I had to re-establish my entire life from almost ground zero. You never can be prepared for the consequences to take a risk, but if you do not take a risk, you will be where you have always been. If you are satisfied with your current situation, good for you. If not, you will have to take risks, and most of the times it will be unpredictable, hard landing but it will be worth it. At least has been always worth it in my own experience. Taking risk builds your character and the success muscle. You feel accomplished and sharpens your critical thinking. And most importantly, helps you to reach your full potential. I have been always uncomfortable while being “comfortable”. Many times we want what we know, but how about if we know better? In this case we want more and not taking risks is only detrimental and interfere with our Destiny. People usually say we need to take calculated risk, there is no calculation in risk. Just my humble opinion.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I teach business, social and youth etiquette. What sets me apart from the rest of the etiquette consultants is that i created very unique history based curriculum from the history of etiquette in France, during King Louis XIV to England and Imperial Russia. And how do we apply etiquette today in business and social situation. , I am bringing the luxury element as a “necessity” for everyone interested and wanted to feel valued because luxury is an emotion. Many people think that luxury is a pom pose and extravagant motion, reserved only for the few privileged. Luxury is a feeling and it is based on our behavior and not necessarily on our material surrounding. You can have your Royal Tea in The Savoy in London or at home in your apartment and you can create delightful atmosphere anywhere you are with the feeling of luxury. Etiquette is a very important part of our life and in many situations is a lifesaving technique. Who wants to be surrounded by rude, aggressive and bad mannered people? I got to where i am today by working extremely hard, my work ethics are really strong and this helped me to move forward every single time. My motto has been always “My best achievement is my last one”, because what we achieved 3 years ago is great but it is no longer relevant, or not as much. People want to hear about new, fresh achievements especially if you are in business, you need to be doing something to be able to grow, because the only satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment comes from growth. Nothing else. The lessons: I got my etiquette credentials from the most elite schools in the world. But the most important thing for us as entrepreneurs is to create our own brand. Being unique and at the same time authentic is our ultimate power. Trying to be someone else, having the similar curriculum as everyone else is only a disadvantage. The most important thing is, it doesn’t matter where we are coming from, it matters where we are going…..
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Well, during this time i don’t really know if anything will be open or if it will even exist in the next a few months, so it is hard to tell. But if probably to Sea port Village, La Jolla Cove, Coronado Island….to see our beautiful city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people and books which can be credited in a small or in a big way. But most importantly to the divine power of our creator. One of the very essential books in my development as entrepreneur was the Millionaire Messenger, by Brendon Burchard. His personal story, growth, determination and hard work were very inspiring to me. I gain positive influence from people in different industries, from royal family members from the history books which never stood a chance to rule a country to the rap artist. We can learn from everyone, because everyone has a story to tell and if resonates with us, we can only apply the lesson.
