We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Stapleton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe being a Woman Owned Business in the Construction Industry has been key to my Company standing out among my competition. Having a highly recognizable and memorable logo. It definitely gets us in the door a lot more than I ever expected in the beginning. When I was working for others it was just something I dealt with, but as the business owner it sets us apart right away. Hiring and retaining the best people I can find is also so important. Letting people go has been difficult but necessary to building a trusted brand.
What should our readers know about your business?
My company is Ms. Sparky Electric, Inc. I have super competent and dedicated employees that it took a long time to assemble! Letting people go is difficult, but at this time I feel very fortunate to have a small core crew who gives it their all. We stand out because we are Woman Owned with a very obvious logo, Rosie the Riveter with a lighting bolt. She is eye catching and familiar. People hire us because of this fact-way more than I ever thought. Combined with skilled Electricians and great customer service that’s a winning combo!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start in North County where we have the most beautiful beaches and great restaurants. Then downtown for a Padre game or a concert at one of the great local venues for music. Balboa park and I can’t leave out the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. My favorite spot for live music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My recovery community and the North County SBDC. Also Accion lent me money in the beginning when I had spotty credit. My women’s support group provided me with encouragement and role models. My sister who has always been in my corner. My son for providing the inspiration and motivation to work hard and not give up.
