We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlon Saunders and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marlon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel that risk taking is a key to a successful business that you envision or dream of. Those of us who decide to follow our passions are deciding to not follow a safe, practical route. This immediately puts the mind in a space to think outside of the box. My entire career has been about taking risks, deciding to move to NYC with no job and knowing that I was going to break into the music industry and I did. My creating my new business venture with ENSE Music and taking a risk of creating my single, ‘Dark Day’ at a time in our country where taking a risk and speaking up for what you feel is right can cause tension with people in your life. For me there are so many amazing opportunities in life and to allow space for them requires taking a risk.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer, songwriter, producer, educator. I have been in the business a long time and I have been very fortunate to have had a successful career from the beginning and I am blessed to have been able to grow as a person and have my work, my dreams and goals grow as well. Currently I am part of the AfroBeat-Soul band, Iqram & The Immigrant Groove which is oh so much fun! From 2015-2017, I toured with Stevie Wonder on The Songs In The Key of Life Tour as choir director.. I have worked as the vocal contractor and choir director for Sam Smith, Bastille, Logic, Mondo Cozmo and Andrea Bocelli. The two most popular work projects that I am known for are my contribution to the SEGA Sonic Adventure games and my guest appearance in the movie Enchanted, where I sing the song ,”That’s How You Know” with Amy Adams!. All great moments!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The most amazing thing I love about LA are the beaches! I would start off with a day in Santa Monica, the shopping, the beaches and the great spots to eat. Also let’s not sleep on Long Beach when you are looking to chill and enjoy some quiet time. West Hollywood area for brunch and good healthy smoothies!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a shoutout and some love to my ENSE Music family, Iqram Magdon-Ismail, Mamadou Ba and Nathan Bergelson! Also my co writer and producer for my new single and upcoming EP, “Meditate On A Dream” John Manni! And the wonderful Jessica Opong who sang her face off on my new single “Dark Day”.
