We had the good fortune of connecting with Marianne Fredericks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marianne, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say, the most important factor behind the success of my brand (in my eyes) would be my determination… I knew what I wanted- and I stuck with it. No matter the hardships, or times I wanted to give up.. Now being a respected tattoo artist in the tattoo industry, my perseverance paid off. People see my talents, and appreciate it enough to want my art on them forever.. I appreciate all of my clients who chose me as their tattoo artist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Let’s see, where do I start.. I love doing realism, that’s where I’m the happiest in creating with my art. I believe what sets me apart from others is the detail I put in to my work: and I feel like people can see and appreciate it as well. The thing I’m most proud of, or excited about- would be that I’m in a private studio (working on my own schedule, clients, time, etc…). I haven’t worked in a walk in shop for over a year and a half. It was a journey, to get to where I’m at today professionally. Through practicing tattoo style art- to getting accepted in an apprenticeship, the years during the actual apprenticeship itself, and all the walk in shops along the way. Tattooing is not an easy career, let alone when an 18 year old wants to get in to the industry. Add being a female to the mix, and it equals a tough journey. It seems like the men (since it’s male dominated) wanted to see me prove myself more than others, just because of being a young female in the industry. After a while I feel like my work spoke for itself. It’s about hard work, and practice.. I also believe that no one is too good enough to stop learning. Everyone can learn and grow still no matter what level you’re at. For everyone’ reading: I’m tattooing in San Diego, California!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man.. I feel like I would be a great tour guide since I love exploring new places and spots with good food. I would say the top recommended spots in San Diego, in my opinion of course: La Jolla beach, old town, drinks downtown/ little Italy, and for food: Chula Vista/ Tijuana. Have you really visited San Diego if you didn’t day trip to get tacos in Mexico? Lol.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The support of my family helped a lot. I get clients all the time who say their parents or family members didn’t want them getting a tattoo- so I’m happy my family saw it as another artistic outlet for me. I’ve been an artist my whole life, basically since I was born.. either with a crayon or marker in hand: always drawing. My mom bought me my first tattoo machine when I was a teenager.
