We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Biffle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the Founder + Owner of Soirée by Ria. We are a party planning company with an online party shop. The company was created from seeing the value in celebrating life. Creating memories of coming together to acknowledge an accomplishment, milestone or just because was a fond memory of mine growing up. I feel that this will always be part of who I am. In turn, when I created Soirée, I wanted to offer assistance in organizing, planning and styling parties/celebrations for that reason. Starting my business was by no means easy. The idea actually came to me when I was in Graduate School for my MBA. Our final capstone project was to create a business from beginning to end and present it. I also had a specialization in International Business, so my project had to include how I would market, sell and trade across the globe. Once I graduated, I often thought about what it would be like to have that as my job one day. Interestingly enough, a time presented itself where I was able to make that decision. I spent a lot of time researching how to start my business and educated myself as best I could – this is how I overcame challenges and obstacles. Now I’m working on a dream and building my empire. It’s an amazing feeling, but you have to put in the work! I would want the world to know that it is important to celebrate success, birthdays and events. Bringing people together (whether virtual or in person) creates a sense of happiness that is contagious. Even the smallest celebration can have the biggest impact on someone. My team and I are believers of making this happen for as many people as we can!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my goodness! Living in San Diego, the possibilities are endless. Well, as soon as I picked up my BFF from the airport, we would head out for a cocktail and some food. A couple of my favorite places to do this is Jimmy’s Famous or Coasterra. Not only do they have some tasty food + cocktails, the views of the San Diego Harbor + Downtown are gorgeous. You could catch up on life for hours while enjoying the view. From here, the rest of the week would be having lots of beach time (some of my favorites are: La Jolla Shores, Coronado and Wind + Sea), heading to the Zoo, maybe a little pool time, having a spa day, checking out the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and definitely more food. Little Italy is one of my favorite places to eat as well as Coronado, Hillcrest and the East Village. Tacos are always a MUST as well. I have too many favorite taco shops to list! Between brunches, happy hours and dinners – any of these places have some of the best eateries and experiences. Spending time together is the most important as well as showing off our beautiful city!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout would first have to go to my parents. Without them, there would be no me! The values, lessons and etiquette instilled in me comes from how I was raised; what examples I had in front of me to make proper choices. Outside of them, there are several teachers and mentors I have had throughout my life that contribute to the story of who I am, who I’ve become, and who I will be in the future. Being an only child, it’s important for me to give this recognition because as I was growing up, I consistently felt like I was in search of who I was supposed to be. My Current chapter is being inspired by all the wonderful women business owners, both locally (high-five to my vendor community!) and internationally. I am humbled to have spoken to and worked with several from across the globe – it’s the coolest experience ever! I know that I still have so much to learn and I welcome all of it.
