We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandi Duong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mandi, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started my business, my idea of balance was focusing on my family during the day and working during naps and after bedtime. This quickly led to burnout. Now, I prioritize myself, because I can’t show up in any roll when my cup is empty. On a typical work day, I focus on three main tasks. Balance also looks like spending the day with family when daycare is closed for holidays and such. The work will still be there, ha, but the precious moments and memories cannot not.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the founder and owner of Blyssen, a small batch, handmade, holistic skincare brand empowering women to love and appreciate themselves by nourishing their self-worth and their glow. As a women, and especially as a mom, it is common to go through an identity shift, leaving one feeling lost and possibly neglected. I experienced this shift and self-neglect when I first became a mom. I didn’t realized how disconnected I have become from myself and who I was until I fell into a deep depression. Building a business, my own business, based on what brings me joy and getting to share my passion with the world, was the first step in reconnecting with my true self. Now, I help women reconnect with themselves and make self-value a priority helping to maintain harmony and stave off burnout.
It is not easy starting a business from scratch and doing everything myself. I am grateful to be a part of multiple communities of entrepreneurs for support, encouragement and expertise. Being the face of my business, has rewarded me with many new genuine friendships. These friendships is how I get through challenging times. I know I am not alone, and even though I am solo in my business, there is always someone to turn to for support and advice. The biggest lesson I have learned is to edit to expand. Doing more does not equate to more success. I have much greater success focusing on a few things and doing them well, then trying to do everything.
I want the world to know that although it sounds cliche, beauty really does come from the inside out, and you get to define beauty. You don’t have to sacrifice yourself and your values to feel loved, appreciated and valued. It just takes a few minutes of self-commitment each day, and you too can glow inside and out.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Three things that bring me joy are spending time in nature, eating good food and experiencing the world through travel. San Diego is full of all three. Our beautiful weather allows for hiking year round with many opportunities to enjoy the beaches to the desert. A few top hikes are Torrey Pines State Reserve, Mission Trails Regional Park and Cabrillo National Monument. I could definitely eat my way through San Diego, especially since the food variety is endless. Whether it’s satisfying my sweet tooth with brunch at Snooze or Atypical Waffle Company or getting my fix of authentic Japanese food at Taisho or Sushi Tadokoro, there is always something to enjoy. A few fun spots not to be missed are Balboa Park, including the carousel, the San Diego Zoo, the breath taking views from Presidio Park and Sunset Cliffs at sunset. Finish off a long day of hiking, touring and eating, with an ice cream flight from Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dear friend Midory, has supported me from the very beginning and I know I would not be where I am today without her. She is always sharing my products with her friends and family and is the first to try any new and potential products coming out the lab. Having true support, encouragement and knowing I’m not the only one that believes in this dream has kept me going even through the tough days. Thank you for being my rock. Love you!!
