We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Hayes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business and my offerings are really an extension of my own life experience. After various experiences in my childhood, I found myself feeling anxious, insecure and confused throughout my 20s. It was then that I found yoga and meditation – and felt a clear access to my body and a true body-mind connection for the first time. The more I practiced in a body-based way, the more it felt like a weight was being lifted, and the more I started feeling like myself again. I knew it was something that I had to share, so I got certified and started teaching. Through my years teaching and letting my own practice evolve, I discovered a few things:
1. How powerful the body-mind connection is when healing.
2. A consistent practice is key to maintaining this connection.
3. How unique everyone’s individual practice and needs really are.
So, I wanted to create a space that would honor all of that. This has evolved into what is now my business, The Core Rising, though I really see it as a lifestyle more so than a business. We offer custom 1:1 coaching programs, group courses (live and self-paced), and masterclasses where you not only learn tools to connect to yourself and relieve old patterns, but bit by bit integrate them into your real life in a sustainable way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey to this point wasn’t easy but one thing has always remained – I believed in this work. Even if I didn’t believe in myself, I believed in the work and the power of the body, because I was personally feeling the impact on myself and seeing it in my students. And I will always share from that authentic place of real life experience, so I hope others can feel that empathy, and feel safe, supported and seen.
And what it all comes down to is this – through this body-based work, I want others to feel their capacity to be present and powerful in their lives, and not have every day dictated by past stories. It’s one thing to cognitively understand that this is possible, but it’s another thing to truly feel it through your entire being.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are soo many fun places to go in San Diego and just beauty to take in! I have no idea the order I would go through this in, but we’d have to hit –
Torrey Pines Gliderport
La Jolla Coast Walk Trail
Palisades Park in PB
Lunch at Hotel del Coronado
Trilogy Sanctuary for yoga and food
Maya Moon for cacao on the back porch
Civico 1845 for vegan pasta
Spend an afternoon in Encinitas
Four Moons Spa
And I think that covers it for all of my favorite places right now!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Love this! I have learned so much from so many incredible people. Number One is Jared McCann of Lighthouse Yoga School – studying with him ignited this spark and truly changed my life. I have also learned so much through Peter Levine and Somatic Experiencing trainings.
