We had the good fortune of connecting with Lashunika Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lashunika, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I began working in the school system in the year of 2019. During my first few years I saw how some students didn’t receive a lot of one on one support from teachers. I also witnessed teachers placed on deadlines and did not have much time to go back to reteach certain concepts and subjects. Parents also expressed their feelings on wanting to provide their child with extra support but were not able to afford support from high end tutoring companies. I saw a vision of being able to not only help students but to help parents who wanted the best for their young scholar.

What should our readers know about your business?

Growing Strong Minds is a tutoring service where we help cultivate young minds. We are a mobile tutoring service that provide services in reading and math for grades Pre-K to 8th Grade. We believe that all children can benefit in a way from tutoring, it does not matter if they are on grade level or struggling in a certain area.

When we first started out we only had one tutee, which is a child whom received tutoring services. Our numbers have grown since. Growing Strong Minds experienced several difficult obstacles during the pandemic, our business jump started right before the pandemic. We continued thru out these trying times. This resulted to having to travel longer distances and adjusting to virtual sessions to fulfill our tutees learning needs. This was not easy due to having to make adjustments that would accommodate our tutees as well make sure they were receiving information in an affective way.

Many students lacked in academic areas due to the pandemic, it caused them to not be prepared for their upcoming grade level. For example some students who were in 1st Grade moving to 2nd were still on beginning 1st grade reading level by the middle of their 2nd Grade year. Growing Strong Minds stepped in and began working long hours while providing students with the academic support they needed as well providing them with resources to help them with their academics.

During these times I have learned to keep moving towards success. Starting a tutoring program taught me consistency. The more constant you are the better results. I have to remind myself and parents that the more practice a student receives the results will be more noticeable. For more effective results tutoring is something that has to be applied weekly.

I want Growing Strong Minds to be known for making a difference on young scholars. These services are sure to help boost young scholars academic confidence.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I am from Georgia, so there are a lot of hidden gems that you may have to find unexpectedly. There are plenty of restaurants that are worth trying. We would have to visit one of my favorites, which is, Starlight Drive-In Movie theater. For a more active day out we would visit the escape room, bowling, as well as the local nature trails. Brunch at Ms. Icy’s Kitchen would be a must have. Grabbing drinks at any local bar is a must do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I dedicate my shout out to my late grandmother Valerie Duffy, who always told me that I had a calling for working with kids. I would also like to dedicate my shout out to my entire support system. They are always listening and supporting me in every thing.
