We had the good fortune of connecting with James Morgan Jazz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My decision to start my own record label, JMJ Records (James Morgan Jazz Records LLC) was a natural evolution of my journey as an artist and brand. From the beginning, James Morgan Jazz has been guided by a clear vision—staying focused, consistent, and committed to growth, even through challenges. I’ve always believed that a successful music career exists at the intersection of creativity, discipline, and collaboration. When you approach your art with intention and treat your business with authenticity and heart, meaningful results tend to follow.

Following a strong run of momentum—including the release of multiple singles throughout 2025 and early 2026, my single “Frequency of Love” reaching #1 on the jazz charts, recognition on the ballot for the 67th Grammy Awards, and receiving the 2025 Intercontinental Music Award—I saw an opportunity to build something larger than my own artist platform.

That vision led to the creation of JMJ Records LLC, based in San Diego, California. The label was founded to help independent artists achieve greater visibility and success by leveraging the industry relationships, marketing strategies, and global reach I’ve developed over the years. It’s about creating pathways for artists who are serious about their craft and ready to invest in their growth.

Since launching the label, I’ve released my 2026 single “Wes Coast Smooth,” which is currently climbing the charts, and I’ve begun expanding the roster with international talent. One of our featured artists is French vocalist Cécile Dutrion, with whom we have an exciting series of releases scheduled through 2026 into 2027 and beyond. This includes multiple singles, supported by strategic promotion and global radio partnerships, including releases with Sandy Shore, CEO of smoothjazz.com global radio co-producing some of the releases.

Ultimately, my goal is to build JMJ Records into a platform that not only reflects my own standards of excellence but also elevates other dedicated artists to a higher level of exposure. I’m focused on long-term growth—developing a strong, diverse roster and continuing to expand the label’s impact within the global jazz community.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art has always been about one core idea: telling a story through the instrument. That’s something I learned early on, and it still drives everything I do today. For me, it’s not about playing the most notes or following formulas—it’s about tone, phrasing, and emotion. If the listener can feel something, then the music has done its job.
What sets me apart is that I’ve never tried to fit into a predefined lane. Early in my career, I was heavily influenced by the jazz fusion pioneers of the 1970s—bands like Return to Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra—and I even had the opportunity to study with Bill Connors, which shaped how I approach the guitar and composition. But over time, I realized that to truly grow as an artist, you have to develop your own voice.
That led me to create my own lane—what I call “West Coast Contemporary Jazz”—a sound that blends melody, groove, and sophistication, while staying accessible and emotionally engaging. With the Ghost Jazz Trio and now the James Morgan Jazz brand, I’ve focused on building a guitar-driven sound that’s both relaxing and interesting—something that stands apart from traditional, sax-driven smooth jazz.
I’m probably most proud of finding my own sound. In a world full of incredible musicians, discovering your voice is everything. Once you have that, you’re no longer chasing—you’re creating.
The journey to where I am today definitely wasn’t easy. It’s been decades—over 50 years of playing, learning, performing, and evolving. There were challenges early on just finding the right musicians who could communicate musically on the same level, and later, navigating the business side of music—building a brand, promoting releases, and getting the music heard.
What helped me overcome those challenges was persistence and adaptability. I embraced the independent artist path—using platforms, radio partnerships, and my own label to build something sustainable. Today, through JMJ Records, I’m not only releasing my own music but helping other artists bring theirs to life as well.
Along the way, I’ve learned a few key lessons:
-Take your time and build a story—whether it’s a solo or a career
-Authenticity matters more than trends
-Your tone and voice are your identity
-Consistency over time is what separates professionals from everyone else

Artists like Pat Metheny or Wes Montgomery are great examples of this—they didn’t just play, they created a signature sound that people recognize instantly. That’s always been the goal.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is simple:
This is music with intention. It’s designed to make you feel something—whether that’s energy, calm, reflection, or inspiration.
The James Morgan Jazz project is about elevating contemporary jazz, keeping it sophisticated but accessible, and proving that instrumental music can still connect with people in a powerful way today, and building the record label with new artists that want to achieve what I have and more.
And most importantly—it’s about continuing to grow. I’m still learning, still creating, and still pushing to make each release better than the last.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Del Mar beach, La Jolla and Carlsbad beach

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been fortunate to have a number of incredible people and organizations play a role in my journey, and I truly believe that none of us achieve success in isolation. It takes a village.

First and foremost, I want to recognize my mentor, the late Dean Brown. Dean not only produced co-produced and played on my 2023 Groovin Smooth album, but he also challenged me to elevate every aspect of my artistry as a guitarist, composer and producer. He pushed me to think bigger, work harder, and pursue the level of excellence and recognition he believed I was capable of achieving. His influence continues to guide me today, both creatively and professionally.

I also want to acknowledge my long-standing relationship with Sandy Shore, CEO of smoothjazz.com, and her outstanding marketing team. Their support, vision, and commitment to independent artists have been instrumental in helping me transition from the (Ghost Jazz Trio) brand, to the James Morgan Jazz, brand, to grow and expand the reach of my music on a global level. Our collaboration, especially in marketing and radio promotion, has played a key role in the success of my releases, my brand, and now, the launch of my new record label, JMJ Records.

Equally important are the fans, radio programmers, and fellow musicians who have supported me through the years. From those who have recorded and performed with me, to those who have shared my music on the airwaves and streaming platforms—each person has contributed to building the momentum that allows me to continue creating and evolving as an artist, a marketing embassadoor and businessman.

The success of the James Morgan Jazz brand, and the vision behind JMJ Records LLC, are really the result of a collective effort by all the aforementioned. I’m deeply grateful for the encouragement, collaboration, and belief that so many have invested in me over the years. That support is what inspires me to not only keep pushing forward, but also to create opportunities for other artists to grow, thrive, and be heard on a larger stage as I have had the opportunity to.
