We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Breakall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what principle do you value most?
Integrity. Basically doing the right thing no matter what. I have seen too many Lash Artists and Permanent Makeup Artists take shortcuts or use low quality or unsafe products because it’s cheaper. I’ve also seen artists perform services on clients who should not have those services done. Not everyone is a good candidate for permanent makeup. So sometimes you have to turn people away and forgo the money you could have made. It’s your responsibility to protect your clients. If you want to keep clients, they need to trust you. They need to know you’re not lying or taking shortcuts to save time or make a quick buck. You don’t have to be “the best”, but you should at least be honest. That’s how you get clients for life, and how you can go to sleep at night knowing you did the right thing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always had a love for art. As a kid I would draw portraits of faces I made up in my mind. I have always loved eyebrows and shaping and waxing them. When I learned what microblading was, I knew I wanted to get mine done. So, I started following a bunch of artists on Instagram until I found one I liked and trusted. After I got mine done, I knew I wanted to learn how do it. I had gone to Esthetician school and had a basic knowledge of the skin, which helped me a lot. But what I think sets me apart, is I try to do what works because for each client on an individual basis. I’ve noticed a lot of artists’ brows all look the same, as if they had used a stencil. Everyone’s facial structure and style is different. So, I do my best to focus on what’s best for the client, not what will photograph best or look best to me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having been born and raised in San Diego, I have a lot of special places I would want to share with people. Most of it would revolve around Mexican food and the beach. I love any taco shop that offers American guacamole with rolled tacos, like Cotijas. Bar hopping in Ocean Beach or Mission Beach is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. Or, I would recommend getting burgers and beers at Rocky’s in Crown Point after spending the day at the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my entire family, but especially my husband, Steve. I never would have started this business without his support. He continues to help me with my budget, marketing, my website, taxes, etc. I do not have a mind for business and he is great with numbers. He is also very level headed, so when I am feeling emotional or take things to personally, he brings me back to reality. I would be lost without him.
