We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Dorsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Go for it! I used to play it safe. Try to get it right. To be perfect. That doesn’t work. Life is messy. Let it be. Your life is meant to be lived. You have dreams inside of you. You regret what you didn’t do. I’m writing this from Mexico. It’s a risk I just took. I’ve dreamed of traveling and working remotely. I’m living it right now. Has it been easy and perfect? No. I can say I’ve had some hard moments along the way to where I am. And, it’s been worth it. I am really proud of myself and who I am. My point in sharing this is to not let those dreams die inside of you. Go out there and live them. Let yourself make mistakes. Trip up. It isn’t about being perfect. Life is full of experiences. You will feel badly at times. You will screw up or drop the ball. Let yourself LEARN. This already happened on this trip. Even though I’d perfectly set up my cell service ahead of time. Guess what, I get to Mexico… and nada. And I run my ENTIRE business from my cell phone. I spent hours trying to resolve. My phone carrier wasn’t going to work. Verizon was unwilling to ship internationally or let me authorize a pick up. AT&T came through and I was still looking at days with no phone. Plus costly international shipping. I realized there are carriers in Mexico. And now, I have Telcel. Let yourself go through whatever it is you’re experiencing. Don’t judge yourself. I straight up ugly cried over this and that is totally okay. The good news is now I can work remotely. It may have been a rocky start but I’m pulling it off now. Time and time again, I see that I can solve and figure things out. I can rely on myself. That shows up in my business life too. Inevitably, I will figure things out. I will solve and I will pursue the things that matter to me. Let yourself be supported by others. Talk through ideas and challenges. So often, that moves you out of the space of the problem and into the solution. Support in your life is invaluable. At this point, I pursue what speaks to me. I let myself follow my joy. Whatever it is that lights me up, gets my attention. There is no 5 year plan. It’s what’s in front of me now. Knowing and trusting that the next step and the next step will present themselves and I’ll follow them. That means I’m always changing and evolving and consistently coming back to shifting into an “I’ve got this” attitude. You have a choice in how you do life. I invite you to dance with it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My brother, Todd Dorsey, and I work together in a business he created, Outside the Box Recruiting Inc. We focus on recruiting sales and sales leadership roles in SaaS. After covid hit, we got to pivot in order to not go under. It’s been powerful to rebuild it and take on new ideas, like the ATL Sales Podcast. Todd is based out of Atlanta. We are a family owned and operated business. We are constantly on the forefront of new technology and we incorporate this into our teaching at How to Launch, Grow, and Scale Your Recruiting Business. I didn’t start out as a recruiter. I was originally a therapist. I worked my way up and into forming a private practice. I closed the doors to that practice to follow my dream of moving to California. I struggled in the coaching world. It felt so similar to therapy. I worked at it for years to try and build it. One day, my brother just casually mentioned that he thought I’d be good at recruiting and did I want to try it. He was right, I really enjoy it. All of those therapy skills come in so handy. I’m good at reading between the lines. I focus on really hearing what the client and candidate want. I am committed to making the right match for a long-term solution. It’s incredible to be back in the coaching arena again as we train students on launching and growing their recruiting business. There is freedom in running your own. Getting to make your own schedule. Knowing that you are doing solid work. It’s an honor to be trusted as their teacher.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Let’s wander through Balboa park and get lost in the vastness and natural beauty. Head down to OB and spend the day at the beach. Grab sushi at the joint. Walk along seaport village. And spend the night out in Little Italy. So many great spots to check out!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my parents for always believing in me and teaching me to get out there and really live my life. I’m blessed to have been supported along the way from day one. To my brother, Todd Dorsey, for speaking his mind and telling me I’d be great at recruiting. He was right. Together we founded How to Launch, Grow, and Scale Your Recruiting Business. It’s super cool to take his life experience and teach others a system that will allow them to experience financial freedom. To leadership coaches that are willing to walk through fire so that you can live a broken open-hearted life. To each one I have worked with, I have immense gratitude in my heart for the work you do. To all of my friends who have been there for me and cheered me on. Thank you for making my life so full and joyful.
