We had the good fortune of connecting with John Astleford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, how has your pespective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Early in my career I was not as good at balancing work/life. Now I dedicate and schedule more time with friends/family, enjoy a few hobbies and exercise regularly. This makes the work ride more enjoyable and helps me keep everything in perspective.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After graduating from TCU with a business degree I entered the workforce as a Retail Manager for a National Sporting Goods Chain. My next stop was working for the former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson. Drew Pearson Marketing had license agreements with the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, Nascar, Disney and Warner Brothers which granted rights to produce and market headwear and cold weather accessories to retailers nationwide. After finishing this enjoyable part of my career, I moved on to various projects in New Business Development, Mergers, Acquisitions and Turnaround projects. In 2013 I moved from my lifelong home state of Texas to California to take on my latest role as Managing Director for San Diego Hat Company.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to La Jolla Cove to see the seals at the children’s pool. Then do some shopping on Girard Ave in La Jolla and finish with some food at George’s at the Cove. We would have to spend a day on Coronado taking in the shops and visiting The Del for a cocktail and people watching. And I would want to visit Catalina Island for a Jeep Tour and some beach time. The rest of the time I would just let them enjoy our great beaches and weather!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would give a shout out to my parents, all my teachers and coaches, TCU, my business mentors and all the co-workers I have had the privilege to work with throughout my career who are my inspiration and part of my story.
