We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Decker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success as well as the success of our company Gut Check Fitness is that we do not nor have we ever followed fads, trends or gimmicks. We do one thing the best in the world and that is only results oriented outdoor fitness. We don’t do yoga, Pilates or Tae Bo, we only focus on fun, motivating but highly effective workouts. This style of training not only helped me break the Guinness World Record for the title “The World Fittest Man” and complete many of the world’s most extreme events but it’s the exact same training that I created to do just that. I always say, Gut Check Fitness is tried, true and proven. “If you want to be the best that you can be then you‘ve got to train with the best.” Can I get a Gut Check?!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Gut Check Fitness is an international Outdoor Fitness and Event company. We not only host extremely fun and challenging workouts but we also host some of the most enjoyable and also the most challenging events in the world. What sets us apart is that we are a small mom and pop shop that truly does care about the well being of our clients but also have created an amazing community of like minded individuals. We’re not a big globo gym or event company that will never know your name or that will charge you for parking or spectator fees. We want to get to know you, we want to see you achieve the results you want as we truly do care. At our events, we want them to not only be affordable but to be the best experience possible, even if it’s attempting our 12 or 36 hour SUCK events. We’ve got to where we are by working hard, never allowing quitting to be an option and surrounding ourselves by those on the same mission. Of course it hasn’t been easy competing against all the big gyms, countless boxes and cookie cutter circuit style studios out there with huge pockets but at Gut Check, quitting is not an option and we love nothing more than a good challenge. The lessons I’ve learned is just that, don’t quit, work hard, treat other people the way you want to be treated and always avoid drama. I want the world to know that if you’re looking for a world class outdoor fitness workout, especially during these COVID times, come see us at Gut Check. We’ve got a spot for you and would love to meet you. If you’re looking for an inexpensive but truly fun event, come join us for a Gut Check 5k trail run like the one in Ramona November 14th and if you’re looking to define your limits by going beyond them, then come join us for a SUCK event. One of our favorite mottos is, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First, they could join us for a Gut Check workout at some of the most amazing parks that San Diego has to offer, then coffee after at either Lofty, Copa Vida, Heartworks, West Bean or James followed by breakfast at Naked Cafe or similar. Most likely hit Black’s Beach, La Jolla Shores or Mission Bay around lunch time with a picnic on the beach with a sandwich from Ike’s Place or head to Pure Project in Balboa park for a pint of killer beer and a pizza. Since we live in Little Italy, every evening would be amazing Italian food/pizza from Isola, Barbusa, Davante Enoteca, Camp Cucina or similar followed by drinks on our deck to watch the sunset. A couple of the days we’d have to hike Mt Woodson, Iron Mountain, El Cap or take them out to the desert to check out the Goat Canyon Trestle or Rabbit Peak with a stop by Jeremy’s on the Hill in Wynola or Farmhouse 78 for dinner. Oh and course would have to do some wine tasting at Ramona Ranch Vineyards, Vineyard Grant James, Speckle Rock or more the amazing wineries that Ramona has to offer. This would get us started.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to my wife, Nicole Decker. Even while she was working 3 jobs when we moved to San Diego 14 years ago, she always believed in me and supported me in pursuing my dream of growing Gut Check Fitness. With her love and support we were not only able to become an international Outdoor Fitness and Event company, but 9 years ago she was able to quit the corporate world and now works with me at Gut Check, ok actually I work for her. Here’s a BIG SHOUTOUT Nicole Decker!
