We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenni Summer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenni, what inspires you?
I am a lover of beauty, at heart. Inspired by my travels around the world and meeting so many amazing people, I find everyone so uniquely beautiful. I believe that each of us shares a purpose: to be aware, astonished, and thankful. When I pick up my camera, my mindset shifts from just idly experiencing my surroundings to genuinely being aware of the beauty around me. With portrait photography, I find beauty within each and every person. I find what makes them laugh and how their nose scrunches up when they do. Then, I capture that moment. A beautiful, unique moment frozen in time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My goal is to use my skills and passions to leave the world a bit more beautiful than I found it—whether that’s telling the story of an intimate elopement in a rainforest or sharing images that shed light on issues of social justice. I look at photography as the method by which I get to leave the world a little better than I found it. I believe each artist is unique in the way that they perceive the world. The way I look at the ocean is from a different perspective than you, not only by our physical perspectives but also our internal perspectives. When I look at the ocean, I don’t just see the ocean – I see the constant movement of powerful yet calming waters being pulled by the moon in the sky. I see the way the sun glows at the crest of the wave. It’s pure magic. Every moment is different and yet the movement is always constant. Unless I capture it, each moment is ephemeral. This is much how I see people around me. We are being pulled by a greater force and each person is beautiful in their differences. Love stories are different, but love is universal. The unique intricacies of each person is what I believe is magical. Everything I do has been driven by this appreciation of beauty and excellence. It is in this appreciation that I have found connection to those around me, always searching for the best in people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love exploring new places within my hometown. I’ve been finding new parks around North County San Diego that are so beautiful. Carlsbad is quickly becoming my favorite city, with the lagoons, the beaches, and the dog parks. I’ve recently picked up tennis and basketball, and it’s been a great excuse to get outside!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful for everyone who has ever clicked the “like” button on any one of my photos or stood in front of my camera. I would love to dedicate this shoutout to Tom Tolman, Jeanette Tolman & Keith Quinata.
