We had the good fortune of connecting with Ja’Mia Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ja’Mia, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Other than deciding to work for myself, the single most important decision I made was to commit fully to consistency and quality. Consistency meant showing up, no matter what meaning posting content regularly, engaging with my audience, and maintaining my presence even during challenging times. It’s not just about being there but being dependable, so my audience knows they can count on me for fresh, engaging content.

But consistency without quality wouldn’t have taken me far. I made the conscious choice to prioritize creating content that resonates with my audience, whether it’s through storytelling, visuals, or providing real value. I focused on crafting every piece of content to be something I could genuinely be proud of, knowing that the quality of my work reflects my brand.

Together, consistency and quality have built trust, loyalty, and long-term relationships with my audience as well as my clients, which has been the foundation of my success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Ja’Mia, and I’m a local content creator, graphic designer, and business marketer in Richmond, VA. I highlight everything Richmond has to offer, from food and parks to apartment tours and unique things to do. Essentially serving as a virtual tour guide for locals and visitors. What sets me apart is my approach to content creation. I’ve built my brand by focusing on Richmond in my own unique style, and I’ve always been passionate about bringing the city’s vibe to life in a way that resonates with people.

I got to where I am today by listening to the needs of the community. Richmond needed a virtual guide to showcase all the amazing things happening here, and when I shared that idea, it immediately went viral. I’ve been building on that momentum ever since. My journey started at Virginia State University, where I initially majored in Mass Communications. At first, I wanted to be a news anchor, but as I learned more about the industry, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. So, I shifted my focus to marketing and public relations, which eventually led me to combine my background in videography with my new skills in marketing and editing. That combination birthed the content creation career I have today.

I’m most proud of how far I’ve come and the fact that I’ve been able to sustain a business for myself for this long. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I’ve learned that if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. There were definitely challenges along the way, but I’ve overcome them by isolating myself when I needed to, focusing on my goals, and surrounding myself with like-minded people who motivate me. I’ve also learned that doing everything the right way is crucial.

I want people to know that I’ve been working hard on rebranding my businesses, and I’m beyond excited about the future. I’ve got some amazing things in the works, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s coming next!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Monday: Chill & Catch-Up We’d start off with a laid-back day to relax and catch up. We’d head to Cafe Zata for coffee and breakfast, enjoying a cozy vibe to start the day. Then, we’d take a stroll along Browns Island—the scenery is perfect for catching up and just enjoying each other’s company. After that, we’d head to The Plant House for a fun activity, maybe plant shopping or a workshop.

Tuesday: Self-Care Day
We’d kick off the day with a hearty breakfast at Millie’s, their food is always on point. After that, we’d go for a little pampering session, starting with nails at Saffron for some extra relaxation. We’d then head over to Skin in Carytown for a luxurious facial. To top off the self-care vibes, we’d wrap up the day with a Pilates session at Niche Pilates Studio. After all that relaxation, we’d go home to cook a cozy meal and settle in for a movie night.

Wednesday: Seafood & Bowling Fun
We’d start the day with a seafood feast for lunch at Poseidon Boil, where the flavors are always fresh. After lunch, we’d head to the park for some cheap and cheerful bowling, followed by drinks to unwind and keep the fun going.

Thursday: Family Fun & Pizza
Thursday would be all about family fun! We’d take the kids skating at The Roller Dome, which is always a blast. Afterward, we’d grab some pizza at Bottom’s Up, and I’m obsessed with their Chesapeake pizza and Margarita Flight

Friday: Glam & Night Out
We’d take it easy during the day and get ourselves ready for the night. We’d book hair, makeup, and nails to get all glammed up, and then head to Vagabond Night Club for an epic night of dancing and good vibes.

Saturday: Day-to-Night Party at The Hideaway
Saturday would be a full-day event, starting with heading to The Hideaway for the ultimate day-to-night party. The atmosphere there is so lively, and we’d be ready to party well into the evening.

Sunday: Relaxed Brunch & Views
To wind down the week, we’d have a cozy breakfast at Moore Street Café—a perfect place to ease into Sunday morning. Then, we’d finish our trip with a breezy brunch at Kabana Rooftop Bar, enjoying the stunning views and sipping on some cocktails as we reflect on the week.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a heartfelt shoutout to my mother, Tyra Brooks. She’s my unwavering rock, always there when I need her and not just present, but present with a smile that can light up any room. Her energy is contagious, radiating positivity and lifting the spirits of everyone around her. She truly sets the tone for love, encouragement, and unconditional support in my life.

I’d also like to highlight a book that’s made a profound impact on my growth: Emotional Intelligence 2.0. It’s a remarkable guide that helped me better understand my emotions and how I express them, giving me the tools to navigate challenges with greater clarity and intention.

I also want to recognize Ladies Golf Too, a group of extraordinary women who have become a cornerstone in my journey. They are the piece of the puzzle I never realized I was missing. Their support, inspiration, and endless motivation have been transformative for me, both personally and professionally. Being surrounded by such a dynamic and uplifting group of women has opened countless doors and pushed me to keep striving for more.

I also want to give a big shoutout to my incredible audience on social media. They’ve been supporting me since 2019, and their encouragement means the world. Whether it’s engaging with the ideas I bring to the table or inspiring me with their own suggestions, they’ve been such an important part of my journey. I couldn’t have made it this far without their likes, comments, shares, and endless motivation. They keep me striving to create and grow.

To my mom, Ladies Golf Too, my amazing audience, and the wisdom found in this book, I’m endlessly grateful. Each has played a unique role in shaping who I am today.
