We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Delgado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Honesty, Open-mindedness and willingness.

To be successful in the gym and out on the street you need to be honest with yourself and transparent with the people around you. With the ability to be honest you are hiding your weaknesses and you miss out on the opportunity to grow through them.

You need to be open minded and willing to try new ideas and training methods in the gym to get past sticking points you have in your lifts if getting physically stronger is the goal. This also carries over into everyday life, if you aren’t open minded to try new things you miss out on opportunities that can benefit you.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of “the true mdsm llc” and the mind behind my non profit “the heavy breathing foundation”.

I believe that physical and mental strength go hand in hand. They are built with commitment and consistency, one day, and one pound at a time. I found the iron at a time in my life when I needed that structure. I want to be able to give that to the people I work with.

I first became obsessed with learning, improving, and experimenting for myself and my own technique. This slowly led me to want to work with other lifters to reach their personal goals. I specialize in many forms of coaching; powerlifting, bodybuilding, tactical conditioning, strong man, and general fitness. I have gone through the process of multiple certifications and continue to further my education so I can improve my ability to help others obtain their fullest potential.

I did not have an athletic background growing up. I’m actually a recovered heroin and crystal meth addict. I was under the influence for 14 years and have been clean for the last 7. I started from nothing and maximized every opportunity to be where I am today. What makes me different is I am transparent and I actually care about my clients. They come first always.

I also have a clothing brand i been building to supplement what i do as a coach. The clothing can be found on the website and its been growing drop after drop.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the presidio park in san diego. That’s where my dad took me as a kid and always gave me heart to hearts about life. I still go to this day to reflect on what i am doing and if he would be proud of me. The view is beautiful.

I would go to stone steps behind Lou’s records in Encinitas. The view of the ocean is awesome and its always quiet.

I would take them to doghaus in vista because I love hot dogs and its the best hot dog spot in town. Vista has put a lot of money into their downtown area and its way better than it once was for night life.

I would take them to our Gym “Iron Mongers” and show them the strongest gym in southern California and the hub of powerlifting events in southern California.

I would take them to get blasted at “ink spot tattoo” the best tattoo shop in North County San Diego where every artist is amazing and the owner Brandon is a solid dude.

I would also take them to grand ave in Escondio Ca, and show them where I started on my journey of being a coach and my stomping grounds for 3 years as i built myself to be the best coach in San Diego.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Rick Simmons the owner of Iron Mongers gym where I train. He gave me the green light and the platform to build myself as a coach and positive influence in the community of San Diego.

Josh Bryant , he is a world renowned strength and conditioning coach my mentor. I found his book under my bed when I was in jail and it changed my life for the better.

Amber Spindleman (my girlfriend) She saw the potential in me that i never saw in myself and has helped pushed me to where I am today.
