We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Donnelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My dad was the inspiration behind starting my business. He worked in the wholesale side of the industry and recommended that I get involved in the residential side when an opportunity arose. I had worked in his factory through high school and college so it was a natural progression to take what I learned from him and apply it in a way that served homeowners directly. His support, insight, and belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to take that leap, and I’m grateful every day for his influence.
What should our readers know about your business?
When I started my business in 1991, remodeling was still very much a male-dominated field, and the industry often carried a reputation that wasn’t always positive. I set out to do things differently. From the start, it was important for me to truly understand my clients’ needs so I could help them in the most effective and thoughtful way.
I’ve never approached my business with a hard-sell mentality. Our clients are inviting us into their homes—a deeply personal space—and I respect that trust and take it seriously. My goal has always been to make the remodeling process as smooth and enjoyable as possible by focusing on communication, integrity, and delivering on our promises.
Over the years, our industry has faced its share of ups and downs, but I’m proud to say that our commitment to customer service and doing what we say we’ll do has kept us consistently busy for more than 30 years. It hasn’t always been easy, but the lessons I’ve learned about adaptability, resilience, and the power of building strong relationships have been invaluable.
What I want people to know about my business is that it’s built on trust, respect, and a dedication to creating beautiful, functional spaces for our clients. We’re not just remodeling homes; we’re creating environments where families live their lives, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud to be a part of.
I’m proud to serve on the Board of the Better Business Bureau and SNAP (the Spay Neuter Action Project). Through these roles, I have the opportunity to support ethical business practices while also helping save countless pets’ lives by preventing unwanted litters.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is truly America’s Finest City, and if I had a week to show it off I’d start by walking the beaches, from the shores of Carlsbad all the way down to the iconic Coronado. And of course a visit to the mountains of Julian for some fresh air and apple pie.
As a vegan, I’d introduce my friend to some of the city’s best plant-based spots. For a sit-down meal, Donna Jean is a must, offering incredible flavors in a cozy setting. If we were on the go, Evolution Fast Food would hit the spot. For an evening out, we’d head to South Park to enjoy creative cocktails and great vibes at Kindred or Mother Ship while soaking in the lively atmosphere.
Throughout the week, we’d visit Balboa Park for its stunning gardens and museums, explore Little Italy for its bustling markets, and cap off the adventure with a sunset at Sunset Cliffs.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Dad has been my mentor and guide since before I started my business in 1991. He supported my journey every step of the way, sharing his industry knowledge, wisdom, and unwavering belief in me.
