We had the good fortune of connecting with Henry DeVries and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Henry, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Our brand is generosity. We give away valuable information through writing and speaking that helps consultants attract high-paying clients. I host tow no-cost Zoominars a month and I write a column on business development for forbesw.com five times a month.
What should our readers know about your business?
In these uncertain times, there is something all consultants and professionals need: more clients. These are emotional times and in order to connect with clients and become more influential, consultants and professionals need to be better business development storytellers. There is a hidden asset that will set a consultant and a professional apart, something nobody else is offering: their defining stories. These stories need to be delivered in speeches and in writing. Indie Books International has been a labor of love since I co-founded the firm with Mark LeBlanc in April of 2014. Two other key players are our partners Vikki DeVries, my wife who I convinced to join us after 20 years at UC San Diego, and Devin DeVries, my daughter who I wooed away from corporate America to join the firm. We work with consultants and professionals who want to attract high-paying clients by marketing with a book and a speech. We are one part book publisher, one part training company, and one part marketing services firm. As a result of working with us, professionals and consultants credit us with giving them more impat and influence. They also report ROI of 4x to 20x (400% to 2,000%). More than one credits us with helping them put more than $1 million in the bank.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oceanside Harbor is a favorite spot for a stroll or a great dinner. If you love seafood, there are some outstanding choices in a seaside setting. The choices are more informal and casual, which I prefer. I also like the village of Carlsbad, and that includes a stroll along the shoreline of old Highway 101.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business partner and business coach Mark LeBlanc, author of the books Growing Your Business and Never Be the Same, has been a tremendous help. We knew we were kindred spirits when were met for lunch in 2005. The meeting grew into a friendship and then a partnership. We both are driven by generosity marketing, showing prospect how much we care by offering help and advice on a no-cost, no-selling, no-kidding basis. I also want to give a shout-out to my mentor of 40 years, Dr. Glen broom of San Diego State, who passed in 2019.
