We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Portalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
Talking about the future is always tough. However, it is something we have to take into account whenever we set a goal for ourselves, right. My end goal is to have a successful career or life in general where I can look back and know that I did the best I could out of what was given to me. For those who have helped me along the road or those who have had an impact on me, knowingly or not, I would like to show them what I have done. Hopefully, making them proud in the process.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As of right now, my day job is as a welder at Veridiam. I had only started there just over a year ago and I got the opportunity to weld. As of now, I am welding material for many of our customers, most notably, SpaceX. That is something I am truly excited about and it is something I am extremely proud of. These parts that we weld go into the Crew Dragon and Falcon 9 rockets. Both of which just had a launch not too long ago which carried astronauts to the International Space Station. Which was historic in itself since we had not launched Americans, from American soil, on American rockets, in almost 10 years. So to say that I may have had one of the parts that I welded on that launch is something truly amazing. I got to this place in my life after a back and forth of ideas in my head as to what I wanted to do in life. I will be the one to admit that this was not my first choice, but by some type of luck, some may call it fate, I found something I can take pride in and look back on in the future as pretty remarkable. As for the lessons I’ve learned, I would just say, follow where your interests take you. That will take you to a place where you can make new opportunities for yourself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For sure you have to go to Sunset Cliffs. One of the best views in California, probably one of the best in the country. Honestly, anything near the water is just amazing. Any beaches would be great. Where do I start on places to eat. San Diego has so many outstanding places to eat especially with such a diverse population. The taco shops cannot, I repeat cannot, be beat by any other city. The Mexican food here is pure brilliance. I can’t forget my favorite food though, pho. My favorite spot is Pho Ca Dao on El Cajon Blvd. That is a perfect place to chill and eat at on any weekend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to say, Elon Musk. One major reason why I am starting to think about the world differently and my place in it is because of that man right there. He is solely focused on advancing humanity forward, regardless of his own benefit. Starting multiple companies. Many of which are focused on helping people and or advancing a certain section of technology, again to help humanity. He is just an inspiration to me and many others. He is leaving his mark in history. One quote that sticks with me is when he was being interviewed by 60 minutes and the question is, why try to build a company and put your money into it if you know it might not be successful. To which he responds, “if something is important enough, you should try… even if the probable outcome is failure”
