We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Hormiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was driven to opening up my business to awareness of women with hirsutism or excessive hair growth all over the female body. My entire life was a struggle of trying to fit into a world full of smooth skin. At a young age I was bullied for the amount of hair on my legs and arms and told to just “shave”, or asked why my mother does not let me shave. I grew up in a very strict culture that saw ‘shaving’ as something sexualized and not for little girls. At the start of high school, I sat on my bathroom floor and immediately started to dry shave my legs using one of my dad’s old razors. I was never accepted the way that I was, whether it was during gym class when I had to wear shorts or even by my own self, who always thought that there was something wrong with me. So my business is here for those women. I specialize in sugaring hair removal. Sugaring is an all natural hair removal method of just sugar, lemon, and water. Sugaring is proved to lead to permanent hair removal with consistency and has been around since the days of Cleopatra! My dream was to always control my hair removal with an alternative that me and many other women can afford.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am an esthetician that specializes in sugaring and luxury facial treatments. My most popular service is the one and only, brazilian. What sets me apart from other estheticians in my industry is my skillset and ability to make people feel at ease during not so fun treatments! Every review I have received was due to how smooth my sugaring process is, from beginning to end. It took a lot of sweat and tears to get to where I am today, mostly because I was not working another job while I started sugaring. So everything I made from sessions with clients went right back into my business. It has taken almost 2 years for me to have some financial freedom in my business and it was all from word of mouth! My clients who love me and support me have always posted about me and referred me to their friends. The biggest lesson in that is to be kind to everyone, because their support is what will make your business thrive!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My most favorite spots in my city are our beautiful San Diego beaches! I would spend my entire day laid out at the beach or even just cruising by and sitting in a parked car, watching the sunset. I am a huge sushi fanatic. I love sushi! My favorite spots are Harney Sushi, Kura Revolving Bar, and Fusion Izakaya 52. I also love to drink boba! My favorite drink at my favorite spot (Trinitea Tea) is a coffee milk tea with honey boba!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my success to my mom for sugaring me from a very young age. My mother would make sugar paste with my grandmother in our small kitchen and use the same paste to remove any hair that bothered me. My mom has always been by my side through everything. When I asked if she would take out a loan to help me get through beauty school, she never said no or doubted me. She has always known that no matter the circumstances, I will always make something out of the little I am given. I also want to give a shoutout to my little brother and my best friend for motivating me. As a perfectionist, I am always putting myself down. Huge thank you to them for reminding me to keep it pushing while staying calm, cool, and collected. Nothing happens overnight and my story is a very long one, but these three people will always be the stars in my eyes.
