We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Hardy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, what makes you happy? Why?
I love helping others get past their moment of overwhelm. When people reach out to an organizer, they usually feel stuck and it feels great to help lift that weight in a kind and empathetic way. Outside of work I lean on nature and God for happiness. God’s creation can lift any anxiety a human might be feeling. It brings you back to that childlike wonder we all miss.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well Kept Organizing is all about making sense of your home so you can live a life at ease. America is all about constant consumerism with new items constantly on your doorstep. We like to take the opposite approach by putting our foot on the brake of buying and asking good questions. Having too many items can add to the anxiety of our pace of life. Paring back brings peace and some control back to the home, when everything has a place and you can easily find what you need. You will also save money by not repurchasing items you forgot you already own. The home doesn’t need to be minimalistic, It can be a rich tapestry of all the things you love and use most that tell about who you and your family are.
I have been a makeup artist for 17 years and am transitioning into this as my second career and business as a professional organizer and decluttering expert and have loved every minute. Every client brings new insight and experience and I have loved getting to them through such a vulnerable experience. The team is growing and we are ready for all the new challenges along the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a 4th generation San Diegan so I don’t like giving away all of my secret nature spots as many have been spoiled by instagram, but I will say I love and am so proud of our thriving businesses here and would love to show them off.
We would definitely hit up many of my favorite beaches and get surf or two in. Some of my favorite shops are La Loupe Vintage in Normal Heights, Solo in Solana Beach and Ocean Beach Antique Mall. My favorite pastries and sandwich are at Wayfarer in Bird Rock. My favorite places for a cocktail are Polite Provisions in University Heights, False Idol in Little Italy or Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad. For dinner, a burrito on the beach from many of our favorite little dives, pizza from Pappalecco in Kensington or Rosarias in Point Loma (Very underwhelming to walk into but I’ve been eating here since I was a kid in 1987 and nothing beats it for a casual pizza) For something a bit fancier I love Wolf in the Woods in Mission Hills or Wormwood in University Heights to pretend I’m Europe and the food at both spots is divine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give credit to Marie Kondo who really brought living with less to mainstream thought. I have always enjoyed tidying and organizing but I also enjoy living in a home of things that are sentimental and tell a story. Her angle lets you have both. A home full of things that are helpful and meaningful, with a balance of a reasonable number of items so finding what you need and putting things away is so much easier.
