We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks, especially in entrepreneurship, takes a great deal of resilience, dedication and trust in your own innate abilities. Being a mother, child birth doula and herbal wellness shop owner, risk taking has played a vital role in my personal growth and success. I started my entrepreneurial journey while working a full time job that provided great financial stability for me. I soon realized that I wasn’t able to fully dedicate myself to my business, while also working for someone else. I knew that I’d have to take the biggest risk of my life to fulfill my dreams.

The only way to create the life that you want is through taking initiative to try new things and step out of the box. It took a lot of courage for me, a single mother, to leave my job and pour myself entirely into my business, but I did it. It was terrifying, operating my business in the first year of a global pandemic. I relied heavily on my savings to get by, and had to work twice as hard to get my business off of the ground. My mantra along the way has been “the life that you want is on the other side of fear”. That has been tried and true for me. Risk taking has unearthed my greatest fears, but has also given me the courage necessary to conquer them.

Ive learned that you don’t have to wait until you are established or in the perfect position to step out on faith and take risks.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Growing up in the lower socioeconomic areas of Long Beach, health food stores and herbal-wellness shops were not easily accessible to many minorities in my community. I wanted to change that. I wanted to create a community where access to alternative medicine and holistic healing were available.

June and Sage. Co was created with the philosophy that we can all learn to heal ourselves and promote overall health + wellness, naturally. Through herbal wellness, plants, clean organic skincare and home care products, we can take ownership of of health and happiness. My goal is to continue to take risks to cultivate a space of healing for my community. June and Sage gives reverence to our ancestors, grandmothers, medicine women, men, and healers that came before us. I believe thy they were the ultimate risk takers and I hope to continue the legacy of resilience, determination and breaking down barriers.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Bloom and Plume is a beautiful cafe and coffee shop in Los Angeles. I’d also recommend taking a stroll down Degnan Blvd in Leimert Park. It is a community staple for African American culture where you can find tea and coffee shops, Authentic Jamaican food, health and wellness shops like Nappily Naturals, Sikas shop, bookstores and more. If you want to experience amazing art, travel down to The Underground Museum with installations from, creator, Noah Davis.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give huge gratitude and recognition to the risk takers that inspired me to continue on my health and wellness journey. Community wellness shops like Nappily Naturals in Leimert Park, Shades of Afrika in Long Beach, and Sacred Vibes Apothecary. Seeing these businesses educate and support their communities, definitely gave me the confirmation to know that my aspirations were possible. I believe that herbal healing is rooted in ancestral wisdom and guidance so, I give reverence to Sally Mccloud, herbal healer from North Carolina, Mary Stepp Burnette Hayden, midwife and herbalist, and the many ancestors, healers, and entrepreneurs who paved a way for myself and others. Finally, I’d like to recognize the women in my family, who have been the backbone and driving force for my business. My mother who constantly provides encouragement and a place of peace. My aunt, who taught me the importance of hard work, sacrifice, and making wise decisions. My grandmother, who modeled and embodied risk taking, hard work and defying odds.
