We had the good fortune of connecting with Dylan Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dylan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was very fortunate to find myself in various start-ups across North County San Diego. I had a lot of different roles over the years in those companies, from warehousing to Director of Operations and Director of Marketing. Being involved with start-ups was an amazing opportunity to learn what to do and what not to do, with little risk on my end. Eventually, the last start up I was involved with had a change in corporate structure and as a result I was laid off. That became the greatest opportunity I had to take everything I had previously learned and apply it to an agency model where I could assist many businesses at one time, while training a team to grow into more sophisticated roles. I figured that if I could successfully grow one business, I could start an agency where I could assist many- and it paid off!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Poppyfield Agency is a digital marketing and business consulting agency. We love and leverage data to make sure that we can build consistently positive marketing and business strategies for our clients. Simply put: we exist to make everything that is digital, very simple. Our transparency and flexibility definitely put us into our own arena. Myself and my team have a unique ability to travel across many verticals of business, to quickly grasp revenue models and set goals/strategies accordingly. We also don’t take on clients whose business won’t grow well within our offering- whether that is based on seasonality or target market- we care about results. So we never just try to lock in clients for recurring contracts for the sake of getting an invoice. We want businesses to thrive and succeed, and if they aren’t a good fit- we set them up with an exit strategy from our agency and let them move on with ease. Our honesty and ability to pivot has helped us grow tremendously. Reviews and relationships are everything in business. If you can acquire new customers rapidly, but can’t retain- you’ll always feel drained and will ultimately fail. With any business to business partnership, it is paramount to maintain a relationship based on integrity, mutual satisfaction and open communication.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I grew up here in North County San Diego, splitting time between Vista and Oceanside. I frequently work out of Captain’s Grounds in Oceanside- love it there! There are so many great spots in North County though. While I have nostalgia when I see all of the new construction, it is nice seeing that as things build up, a ton of small businesses are starting and thriving here. Oh, and if you’re ever in Vista, do yourself a favor and get a milkshake from Peppertree.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, of course! Without her, none of this would be possible. We have 2 young children and she does more than anybody could possibly be compensated for. That’s not to say that I’m not an involved dad, it is just a heavy load to start and maintain a young business- a load that requires appropriate attention and time. Without her, this business wouldn’t exist- period. Thanks babe!
