We had the good fortune of connecting with Derika Denell Gibson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derika Denell, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I believe reading 30 minutes per day and maintaining a weekly workout routine helps to me to stay in shape mentally and physically. I’m also an avid researcher, as I have found being familiar with the data surrounding specific trends and industry-specific solutions have helped me to increase my closing ratio with new clients and network with more like-minded individuals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Gibson Vernacular Communications began from my decision to offer marketing and sales training services on a freelance basis. As I gained more business-to-business sales and marketing experience from having worked full time, while simultaneously building my entrepreneurial venture. Having overcame homelessness and struggling to find gainful employment with a company that I could grow with, I learned the importance of hard work and perseverance during hardship. Once I learned how to effectively channel my energy into action, I realized that consistent redistribution of energy is vital for me to keep from slipping into a “hamster wheel” lifestyle; in which movement is valued over results.
I went from home improvement to the digital marketing industry, in which I successfully learned to execute both the 1-call-1 close and consultative sales cycles. It wasn’t until I learned how to implement my engagement and relationship building skills into media relations. The power of PR and marketing showed me how important moral character is, even when no one is looking. Regardless of what is deemed as popular in today’s society, I prioritize honesty and authenticity, as it will always remain the most refreshing hot topic!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend of mine were to visit Los Angeles, I would be sure to show them some of the great beaches here, such as Bruce’s Beach (formally Manhattan Beach) and the Santa Monica Pier. I would plan for my friend and I to visit buildings designed by legendary architect Paul R. Williams, at least two sites per day during their week long stay. Buildings such as the First AME Church, UCLA Botany Building, Stanley Mosk Courthouse and Baldwin Hills Mall are just a few examples of the impeccable works of Mr. Williams.
My friend and I would definitely stop by the La Brea Tar Pits, Peterson Automotive Museum and check out the stars along the infamous Hollywood Boulevard. We would make time for a nice workout at the Culver City Stairs, and a hike at Griffith Park; the observatory and the Hollywood sign views are amazing! When it comes to the food, Los Angeles has a multitude of menus to choose from. However, I would introduce my friend to a few of my favorites such as Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen and Flavor Table. We would also have to visit Johnson Brothers BBQ and Birrieria Gonzalez in Compton, for some great dinner plates.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my mother and father for all of their sacrifices and teaching my sibling and I the value of moral character and hard work. I want to thank the marketing and public relations managers that taught me skills that I still utilize today!
I thank the ADOS Advocacy Foundation for opening my eyes and ears to the history of policies that have failed to provide pathways for the Black community to build and maintain businesses and entrepreneurial endeavors in the U.S.
