We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Luce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After spending a good amount of time researching publication options, getting published and also getting rejected, I had a spark of inspiration to offer an inclusive, diverse platform for artists at any stage of their career. I instantly knew that I wanted to bring Lauren Messing on board, because we’re both creatives with over 12 years experience in the photography, graphic design, and make-up industry. Lauren thought it was a fantastic idea, so we started making plans to bring our vision to life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets us apart from other magazines, is the fact that we encourage artists at every stage of their career. We welcome multi-published artists, as well as the ones who have never been published. A lot of artists feel like they’re not good enough – and we’ve been there too. We’re proud to offer the most inclusive and diverse platform, for artists of all ages, backgrounds, sexual preference, gender identity, ability etc, We also recognize that every successful shoot is made possible by the combined talents and efforts of the whole team, so we take pride in making sure that everyone is properly credited. As our platform grows, we’ve had the opportunity to grow and learn as well. We both believe that sometimes just jumping in and doing the thing is what gets you to where you want to be. And most importantly, always remember that NO just means Next Opportunity. Keep going, keep pushing, surprise yourself!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’re both huge foodies, and especially in these times it’s been nice to order in and work on the magazine. Some of our favorites include: – Avenue 3 Pizza in Cerritos (ave3pizza.com) – besides amazing pizza they also offer delicious pasta, sandwiches and so much more – Devi’s Donuts in Long Beach (devisdonuts.com) – absolutely scrumptious vegan donuts – Crack Pies L.A. (crackpiesla.com) – a plethora of different, yummy cheesecakes and much more And being friends and hanging out with a photographer and make-up artist, chances are you’ll end up in a creative shoot at Elysium Studio in Garden Grove (elysium.studio), which offers a broad variety of stages so you can play to your heart’s content!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Denise: my amazing husband and favorite artist Jon, who is always there for me and my creative and other adventures, and has taught me so much about life and art. I am the luckiest woman in the Universe to have you. Definitely Lauren too, because I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else besides my Gemini sister. And for always keeping me focused, and for being wholeheartedly committed to Corbeaux Magazine. A huge thank you goes to my beautiful Mama Ingrid, who has always encouraged my creative and sometimes weirdo spirit. Another thank you to my lovely mother-in-law, Annie, who loves me like her own, and always encourages me. A shoutout to all my family members, friends, clients who keep cheering me on. Lauren: My mentor and Special Effects Makeup teacher Greg Lightner was and continues to be a huge support in my life with makeup. He helped me realize that it’s not about fitting into a mold as a Makeup Artist, but to be yourself and to consistently keep learning. Within that your talent as an artist will grow. Through this experience of running a magazine, Denise has been one of the most understanding, encouraging, and true friends a gal can have. I am truly grateful for our friendship and to be on this journey with her. My main support, love, and encouragement comes from my husband Aaron. He has been continuously by my side and I am extremely grateful for him. From both: A huge shoutout and thank you to all the artists who submit their work to our magazine. You inspire us and keep us going on a daily basis!
